Book Review of ‘Theodore Boone’ by John Grisham

Courtroom Drama, Grisham, John Grisham, Legal Thriller

“Theodore Boone” is a 13-year-old with a passion for legal matters. His parents are lawyers and through them he has amassed an impressive knowledge of law and its practical application. His desire to follow a local courtroom drama is tested when unexpectedly he becomes privy to a witness who is reluctant to come forward.

The Storyline of “Theodore Boone”

Theodore Boon lives in the small city of Strattenburg with his parents. His father is a real estate lawyer and his mother a divorce lawyer. Theodore’s desire is to become a great trial lawyer.

As the book opens, the city is buzzing with anticipation as the trial of Peter Duffy is poised to commence. Duffy has been accused of murdering his wife Myra and collecting one million dollars in life insurance. Theodore’s government class attends one of the court sessions and he is fascinated by the proceedings and argues with his friends over whether the accused is guilty or not.

In spite of a thorough investigation, no witnesses have come forward and it seems that it will not be possible to prove whether Peter Duffy is guilty or not. The trial takes on a whole new dimension for Theodore when he is presented with a witness who was not only watching the house at the time of the murder, but also has physical evidence.

Theodore spends some uneasy nights before confiding in his uncle – an ex-lawyer. The story unfolds rapidly as his parents become involved and the witness comes forward on the condition that he will not be extradited as an illegal resident of the United States.
