Bleaching Blue Jeans

Bleach, Bleaching

Most people own at least one pair of jeans. What if you think your jeans are a little dark or just need a change? A good idea is to bleach your jeans. There are ways to do this without turning your jeans completely white.

Be extremely careful when using bleach. If you spill on fabric other than the jeans you are bleaching, it will stain. Also, never mix anything other than water with bleach. You could make a very toxic gas if you mix it with vinegar or ammonia.

It’s a good idea to work outside. The bleach will give off fumes and it’s easier to clean a mess if it happens outside. Wear gloves and an apron to protect yourself and your clothes.

First, you need to get a scrap of jean fabric so you can test out different techniques and find one that works best for you. There are many ways to apply the bleach. You can use a paintbrush, a sponge, a spray bottle, or even put the entire piece of fabric into the bucket of bleach. Also, try using different measurements of bleach and water. Try using full strength, three quarter strength, half strength, and quarter strength solutions. Also experiment with the timing. The longer the bleach is on the jeans, the whiter they will become. The time gets lengthened and shortened depending on the strength of the bleach mixture.

Pick a convenient spot, and spread out your jeans. You can hang them if you would like. If you are only bleaching one side of your jeans, then stuff them with newspaper so the bleach doesn’t go through to the other side.Have lots of clean water available. Your jeans will need to be rinsed about every five minutes. Leaving bleach on your jeans for too long will make them easy to tear and may cause holes. Be sure to change out the water after you have rinsed your jeans a couple times to keep the water clean.

When you have finished bleaching your jeans you need to wash them in the washing machine. Fill the washing machine half with water before adding the jeans. Run them through the regular wash cycle and they will be ready to be worn once they are dry. You can either use a dryer to dry them, or you can hang them out in the sun. The sun will help bleach the jeans a bit more.

If you own a pair of jeans that you feel the color is too dark, or you just need a change, you can bleach your jeans. It will lighten them and you can use your imagination in applying the bleach to the jeans to give them a different look. It is a fairly easy process, so have fun with it and see what you can come up with.
