I always know when my tires need air because, at around 60 miles per hour, my little Mazda truck vibrates ever so slightly. We communicate well, and thank God, because otherwise I would never remember to check tire inflation.
It is extremely important to maintain proper tire inflation regardless of what kind of vehicle you drive. Not only are there safety and environmental benefits, but it can also save significant dough since you won’t have to replace your tires as often.
Comfort
I admit, this is probably the most important reason for me. I like a smooth ride, and when my truck is shaking every time I get on the freeway, I tend to get irritated. When I monitor tire inflation and add air when necessary, however, I don’t experience that negative consequence.
The difference in your vehicle might not be as pronounced in your vehicle as it is in mind. But failing to maintain proper tire inflation will lead to a rougher ride, if only over speed bumps and uneven terrain.
This is also a good tip to remember. If your car starts to vibrate or shake, the first thing you should check is the tire pressure. Then look at the tread on your tires to see if it’s worn too thin, and maybe have your tires rotated and balanced. These simply maintenance tasks can prevent a lot of headaches down the road.
Improper tire inflation will decrease your gas mileages, and with the increased prices at the pump, no one wants to deal with this. So stop at the gas station every once in a while to check the pressure and add air if necessary. It’s a five-minute inconvenience that could save hundreds of dollars over the lifespan of your tires.
Tire Safety
Proper tire inflation can prevent serious accidents-accidents that could potentially cause damage not only to your car, but to other people’s property as well. When a tire is under-inflated (or over-inflated, as the case may be) it is far more susceptible to punctures and blow-outs.
A handy way to avoid this problem is to keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove box. That way it’s right there when it occurs to you to check tire pressure, and if you do it ever few weeks you shouldn’t ever experience a problem.
Longer Lifespan for Tires
As mentioned previously, proper tire inflation will increase the lifespan of your tires. The tread won’t wear down as quickly and you’ll be able to squeeze quite a few extra miles out of them if you are diligent about checking tire pressure.
And remember, this is most important in extreme temperatures. According to Edmunds, tire pressure changes by 1psi for every “10 degrees Fahrenheit change in ambient temperature.” The pressure goes up during the summer and down during the winter.
Maintaining proper tire inflation is easy enough for anyone to do it, and it makes sense in light of all the problems that can be caused by neglecting it.
