Badgers as Pets – More Work Than They’re Worth

Badgers are usually not kept as pets because people are very fearful of badgers. This is because badgers are known for eating dead meat. They will not go out and look for food, they will simply wait for something that they may find. They will often go out into a garden and kill some type of rodents that they find eating in the garden. Badgers are also very unpredictable. They will be full of excitement one minute and then the next minute they will be stuck to your side and not want to move. Badgers also have very long nails and therefore people are afraid of being scratched.

I’m not saying that badgers cannot be kept as pets but it might take a lot of work and patience. Badgers rarely kill household pets such as cats and dogs. You would still want to make sure that the badger is in a cage while you are at work or if you are away from your home for the day. You should not leave the badger unattended in your home and keep an eye on the way the badger acts. If it suddenly starts acting funny it’s probably not the best time to run over and pick up the badger.

With all of this being said, you should check your state laws to see if you can keep a wild pet in your home. Most states do not allow you to keep wild pets in your home, especially if you live in the city. Some states will allow you to keep the pet but you have to have a permit to keep the pet in your home. If you do not have a permit for the animal then it will probably be confiscated and you will be fined. This is why it is important that you check into the laws before you run out and get a badger. Even if the badger is orphaned, this is still not acceptable to keep the animal as a pet.

If you have a badger and you have other pets in the household you will want to make sure that your other pets can get to safety. You will want to have places that your cat and dog can retreat to in case the badger suddenly starts fighting with you pet. Also do not let your pets corner the badger or vice versa inside of your home. This will only lead to a fight. Do not let them stare at eachother for long periods of time because that will often lead to fights as well.

You will need to find out how to make a secure kennel or cage. Even wire cages are usually not secure enough. You will need to provide fresh water and food. Badgers usually only eat dead meat so it can be difficult to find them food.
