Baby Sippy Cup Leash

Sippy, Sippy Cup, Velcro

It’s no wonder many moms are exhausted all the time. Just one routine – say feeding the baby while he or she is in the highchair – can leave a person depleted of energy. You put the sippy cup on the highchair tray, and it gets knocked off. You rinse it, give it back, and in the floor it goes again. Just one meal can be debilitating for Mom. Life will be so much easier, though, when you make a leash for that sippy cup. It can also be used for a bottle or a toy, and can be made in just minutes! Then, if the cup falls, it doesn’t fall all the way down, and the baby can easily reach it.

All you’ll need for the sippy cup leash is a long piece of ribbon or hemmed fabric, some Velcro, and a D-ring. You can sew the leash up in minutes but, if you have no way to sew, you can always glue it. To start, cut a one-inch-wide ribbon to be eleven inches long. Cut a second piece to be twenty-two inches long. Slightly burn all of the ribbon ends to keep them from fraying over time. Slide one end of the short ribbon into a D-ring and sew the end down. Leave extra room so that the ring can move around easily, and so that you can add the second ribbon. A zigzag stitch works best to attach the ring; sew back and forth a couple of times to secure the ribbon.

You know the loop that was formed when you folded the ribbon through the D-ring? Thread the second ribbon through that loop but not through the D-ring itself. After threading it through that loop, fold the ribbon end over on itself, then sew it in place. Use a zigzag stitch and go back and forth a couple of times.

At the unsecured end of the long ribbon, fold it over five inches or so, then stitch it in place, just at the end. This will form a large loop that is necessary for securing the finished sippy cup leash. Cut two inches of the rough side of a piece of Velcro. Position it at the very end of the short ribbon – the end that isn’t attached to the D-ring. Sew around the perimeter of the inch-wide piece of Velcro to attach it. It should align, at the sides and at the end, with the ribbon. Cut four inches of the soft side of the Velcro, lay it on the ribbon, at the end of the first Velcro piece, and sew around the perimeter of the Velcro. The two pieces should be end-to-end.

To use the sippy cup leash, lay the large loop over the bar of a high chair, over a car seat belt, or elsewhere. Thread the Velcro end of the leash through the loop and pull it tight. Wrap the other end of the leash around a cup, toy, bottle, or other object, and as you wrap it, keep the Velcro on the outside. Wrap it around the object and stick it to itself. Your life is going to be so much easier now!
