Are Space Saver Bags Worth the Cost?

I am sure that we have all seen the infomercials for the Space Saver Bags that supposedly save space for you. The ads claim that they will save you a dramatic amount of space and prevent damage from moths, mildew and other damages that occur when you store your clothes. Now I happened to have some extra clothing lying around and decided to purchase the products to see how they worked for me before making a major monetary commitment to the Space Saver Bags.

The method that the bags work is by taking your clothing and placing them in a Space Saver Bag and vacuuming out the air. Now this is a very good thing because the stagnant air is what will take up a majority of the room in your regular storage bags. However, you do have to be careful with these Space Saver bags at the same time and make sure that you have a very good seal on the top. The basic concept is very easy to follow and even my kids have managed to help out with the space storage bags.

Some of the positives that the Space Saver Bags will give you are that they will allow you to store quite a large amount of clothing in a small area. They give you a ton of extra space in small cramped closets. The available size of bags varies greatly giving you a wide range of options to purchase.

Now you might be asking yourself how much extra space can be afforded to you with the Space Saver Bags. This is a very good question, but you do have to remember that it all depends on the size of the bag that you purchase. Now I have purchased all of the sizes that they offer and even the smaller travel sizes do give you some extra room while traveling. The jumbo bag, which is very large, can fit almost any type of bedding set that you can ever want to store. I know in my jumbo Space Saver Bag I have 2 comforters, 2 full queen size sheet sets, and 4 pillows. Now this Jumbo Space Saver bag could actually hold more of my clothing, but I do not want to overfill the bag. The travel bags will afford you some extra luggage room, but if you are planning on winter travel it is very hard to put in sweatshirts or other bulky clothing.

The extra space that you will find while utilizing the Space Saver Bags will absolutely amaze you. I know I managed to take a very cramped closet that you could hardly move clothes in and managed to make it to the point that you can move the clothes and even find the ones that you’re looking for. Granted the bags do take up some room, but you can take a stack of clothes that would be in your closet that would take up about 3 feet high is stacked on top of each other and compress them down to less than 1 foot in my experience, if not smaller.

The range of sizes of Space Saver Bags that are available for purchase will absolutely blow your mind. The bags will range from smaller roll-up travel size, to the large Jumbo size. They even have Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. The bins that are available from the Space Saver Bags will allow you to store quite a bit as well. The bins do have the provided protection of several layers.

However, every product that you purchase will have some drawbacks as well. The Space Saver Bags are not any different. Some of the drawbacks that I have seen is some of the bags can easily tear. Another drawback is the valve that they come with can fail at times or they do not hold the vacuum seal for a long period of time. Then one problem that I almost always encounter while using my Space Saver Bags is that unlike what they show on television you have to mold the bag while the air is being sucked out otherwise you will get a big lump of clothing or blankets.

The tear issue that I have encountered has been on the larger bags. The jumbo size bag and extra large Space Saver Bags I found they tear easier than any other Space Saver Bags I have used. I know that one of the bags did tear was around the valve area. However, I also know that the bags have torn on the seams on the side as well. However, these tears only happened a couple of times while I was using the Space Saver Bags.

The Space Saver Bags have a patented one way valve for advanced protection. However, I have had problems from time to time with the valve failing and the bag filling back up with air. The filling back up with air I cannot find any reason as to why it occurs until I checked the valve and the seal was that fits inside of the vacuum area was unseated. Now this occurred during the vacuuming process. So this was probably more of my mistake than anything, but it is a problem that I run into quite frequently.

The shaping of your Space Saver Bags takes and art to accomplish. I have tried many times to do what they show on television of where they just attach a vacuum hose and suck it down giving you a perfect square shape. Now, I know from my experience that I have to constantly shape the bag while it is being sucked down otherwise I just end up with a big clump of clothing or blankets. The only item that I do not have to shape while utilizing my Space Saver Bags is pillows. This may not seem like such a large task, but when you are using the larger bags it is hard to reach the far corners of the bag while holding the vacuum hose. If you do get the large clumps of clothing and need the extra space you may have to redo them.

The Space Saver Bags will definitely give you all the features that you could want for a bag that will give you extra space. However, the Space Saver Bags also have some drawbacks that can become annoying or time consuming. Even with the drawbacks that the Space Saver Bags has I would have to recommend them to people that are cramped on space they work and will give you extra space.
