An Interview with Jason Walker: Dance-Pop Singer Songwriter

Jason Walker is growing, as a person and an artist. “Change can hurt sometimes, but in the end…. Even when it is painful and traumatic, it is really a catalyst for growth,” explains the singer/songwriter.

In 2006 Walker entered the dance scene with a brash, poppy and sassy freshman album, “This Is My Life”. Walker returns with a sophomore effort this year, “Flexible,” This album is an impressive collection of material that goes deeper then your standard dance tracks. “Flexible,” so named because Walker wanted to showcase his versatility and reach, is a tremendously personal piece that listeners and fans will find really crawls into the psyche of the performer.

Associated Content: What was the genesis of this album?

Jason Walker: I didn’t want to do the same type of record twice; I wanted to develop what we had done last time. There are some songs that will remind people of of “This is My Life,” but hopefully as a continuation and not a rip-off. You always want to grow as an artist.

Associated Content: But “Flexible” has more of a raw and personal sound, what triggered that?

Jason Walker: I think I was more comfortable with the process of recording the album. I became more daring and open to putting some of my personal feelings into the work. It’s my second album; I was ready to take a few chances.

Associated Content: Was this an easy album to produce?

Jason Walker: That’s hard to say. The last record took a year and a half to create and produce; this one only took three months. We had all the songs ready and I guess after the first album we are seasoned pros. [Laughs] I knew what to do and what not to do way better this time around. With your first album, there is always a learning curve and some screw-up time. With your second, you just kind of go into the zone and crank it out.

Associated Content: I read that you were going through a breakup as you were recording the album.

Jason Walker: That is true. I did.

Associated Content: Did that break-up translate into your music?

Jason Walker: [Sighs} Probably. How could it not? I don’t think the album is a big break-up album, but I think some of the feelings and emotions I was dealing with did affect the process. But honestly, I was thankful to have something to keep my mind occupied, something that kept me busy. The album really saved me, personally. I had that to focus on the work and didn’t have time to be sad or angry.

Associated Content: It would be hard for me to go out on stage and belt out songs dealing with my break-up every night.

Jason Walker: It would be for me too, but now I’m in a place where it is okay. I have some distance, and the album gave me a lot of closure.

Associated Content: What is your favorite tract on this album?

Jason Walker: I don’t have one, I really love them all. They are so personal, it’s like they are all my kids. I can’t pick between them.

Associated Content: This album spawned your first music video…

Jason Walker: “I Can’t Get You Off My Mind,” yeah…I love it! We did it with Karl Giant, who shot the “Automatic” video for Ultra Nate. It’s an incredible video, really fun and energetic. It’s out right now!

Associated Content: Giant used to be a world reknowned make-up artist…

Jason Walker: Yes, so you know our faces are flawless. [Laughs] I think Karl brings a really incredible and tight focus to the performer. His direction really strengthens what the performer is saying. If you watch the video, you will see what I mean…

Associated Content: What was it like making the video?

Jason Walker: Long and painful…[Laughs] No, it was incredible. You can sing and write songs, and perform all over the country; but shooting a music video is really the biggest moment of a performer’s career. I might sound stupid, but you really feel like you have arrived and you’re a legitimate act. It’s tremendously hard work and a lot of effort, but it is entirely worth it in the long run.

Associated Content: What is next for Jason Walker?

Jason Walker: Jason Walker is touring his ass off supporting his album. [Laughs] Everyone should check my website and come see me when I come to their town.
