Guide Dogs, Popular Dogs, Rescue Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, The Boxer

The AKC announced a list of the most popular dogs of 2011 this week. They posted an official announcement on their website on February 28 and a video announcement of the top ten on their YouTube page on Friday March 2. The list is made using registration papers of all AKC pets in the United States; So, this list can really be called ‘The Most Popular or Most Owned Pure-Bred Dogs in the U.S.’

The AKC Top 10 Dogs of 2011 are:

10. Rottweiler. These giant teddy bears have made their way in to the top 10! They have been gaining popularity since 2006. Rotties have the look and power of a guard dog with the heart of a loving companion.

9. Dachshund . Also called ‘wiener dogs’ or ‘hot dogs’, these little guys have borrowed their way into our hearts. They are known for their adorable stature: short legs and long round bodies.

8. Poodle . Poodles come in a variety of sizes and can be a lap dog or a running companion. From teacup to standard, these dogs can fit in with any family. They are also one of the smartest breedsaround.

7. Boxer. The boxer is known as a comedian. They love to make you happy and look good doing it! Many people love the size of the boxer as an indoor pet, not too large and not too small.

6. Bulldog . The bulldog yields its likeness to many schools as a mascot. Our armed services even adore the wrinkly pups. What can be more American than an American Bulldog?

5. Yorkshire Terrier. The ‘Yorky’ is small enough to be a lap dog but large enough to run and play with the kids. Their appearance changes over time, with their hair type and color transforming from the puppy years into old age.

4. Golden Retriever. This long haired beauty has great hunting instinct and a love of the water. They are often used as guide dogs for the blind and search and rescue dogs. They are very friendly and very intelligent.

3. Beagle. Who doesn’t love a beagle? Beagles are popular hunting dogs but they have been growing in popularity with the kids. Their cute colors, short stature, and long floppy ears make them a hit with the 6 and under crowd.

2. German Shepherd. Best known as a guard dog for their work with police units, these dogs take their work seriously. They have been used professionally as drug sniffing dogs and trackers. Many homes make room for this security officer as a member of the family.

1. Labrador Retriever. The ‘Lab’ has held its spot as the most owned dog in America for 21 years! They are large and lovable and come in a variety of colors. They have a great reputation as a family dog, but can also be used to hunt game.

I was surprised that smaller dogs didn’t rank higher; Turns out the Pomeranians and Chihuahuas have been declining in numbers for years. The full list ranks all dog breeds recognized by the AKC; If your favorite K9 is not in the top ten you can still see where they rank by visiting the AKC website.
