Advantages and Disadvantages to Attending College Online

College Online

College is something that people of all ages may attend at some point in their lives. However, the traditional college experience is now being supplemented by an interactive perspective. In this article, I will discuss some advantages and disadvantages to attending college via the Internet.

Easy Access –

If you decide to attend college online then you will not have to worry about visiting the college of your choice. You will also not have to concern yourself with the thought of relocating to another state to attend whatever college you select. All you really need is the college’s website URL, and you’re all set. The days of you searching for that perfect parking spot are also over. And you don’t have to walk all over the campus and search for your classrooms. Everything is done from the comfort of your computer screen.

Focus on Your Work –

You may not realize it, but going to college online will mean less distractions for you to deal with. Chatty people, individuals who smell, pranksters, and others will not be present in the room with you. So you’ll be able to focus on your work, instead of being sidetracked by other people.

Create Your own Schedule –

Since the online college experience is created to work around your schedule, you will not have to worry about being late for class. This means no angry professors can berate you for leaving early or arriving at the incorrect time. You make the rules, at least when it comes to the time.

Lonely –

While the lack of people may allow you to focus better, it also may be fairly lonely. The social aspect of college is important to many people, so you may feel like you’re missing out if you go to college online. Frat parties, the roommate experience, and other common aspects of college life will be off limits to you. As for friends, you’ll just have to figure out another way of making some. You could try becoming more acquainted with your neighbors. Though there’s no guarantee that your neighbors will be your age, so you may be out of luck.

Computer Problems –

An Internet outage or a hard drive failure could become quite a nightmare if you’re going to college online. So make sure you have backup plans available. Perhaps have a spare computer handy, or ask a friend if you can use their computer in an emergency. As for the Internet outage, you could go to a coffee shop and use their wireless Internet. Just remember that wireless Internet access is not normally secure at coffee shops or other similar locales, so make sure your data is encrypted.

As you can see, the online college experience has both advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you to decide whether or not the virtual world is the right path for your education. But it’s definitely worth investigating.
