A Review of Crest Whitening Expressions Toothpaste

Saccharin, Silica, Sorbitol, Sucralose, Whitening Teeth

When Crest came out with their new line of toothpastes scalled Whitening Expressions, I received some samples in the mail in the “Cinnamon Rush” flavor. I loved it so much that I ran out and bought a tube, even though it wasn’t on sale.

The product is available in two forms, a 6 ounce tube and a 4.6 ounce bottle with a flip top cap. We have this in both forms, the tube we keep in our bathrooms, and the bottle is the perfect compact shape for travel – both in our suitcases and in our motorhome medicine cabinet. The bottle is nice because the cap is on the bottom and gravity works in my favor making the toothpaste easy to squeeze out.

I love flavor of cinnamon, and Crest Cinnamon Rush didn’t disappoint! In fact, since using it I find those minty flavored toothpastes boring. My husband likes those hard cinnamon-flavored candies, but they are too strong for my tastes and actually give my mouth a burning sensation. Although Crest Cinnamon Rush is a strong flavored toothpaste, it doesn’t burn like some strong cinnamon flavors can.

The consistency is a liquid gel, and it is very easy to squeeze out from both the tube and the bottle. I love the way it doesn’t gunk up around the spout like some toothpastes do. The color is red with a glittery look, so it may be a toothpaste that children would be attracted to.

Inactive: Sorbitol, Water, Hydrated Silica, Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, PEG-6, Glycerin, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Disodium Pyrophosphate, Flavor, Sodium Saccharin, Cellulose Gum, Carnauba Wa , Carbomer 956, Sucralose, Titanium Dioxide, Red 40.

Does It Live Up To Its Claims?

For the most part, yes. Like most toothpastes on the market, it contains sodium fluoride for anticavity protection. Crest uses sorbitol, sucralose (Splenda) and saccharin to add sweetness, which I prefer over sucrose or sugar. The hydrated silica helps give the toothpaste it’s gel-like consistency, and it scrubs the teeth to remove plaque and tartar (silica is used in those abrasive powder cleaners like Comet). Hydrated silica is safe and natural and is mildly abrasive on teeth. It has no odor or taste.

As far as whitening teeth, I have not found this to do any significant whitening for my teeth, (but drinking a lot of coffee every day probably doesn’t do my teeth any favors). In all fairness to Crest, I have not found any whitening toothpastes, even more expensive ones, that live up to their claims.

The gel doesn’t foam up as much as paste style toothpastes, and it leaves my mouth feeling tingly fresh and clean. After eating strong foods such as garlic, onions, or seafood, I will often brush my teeth with Crest Cinnamon Rush rather than use a mouth wash. It does a great job of covering up those strong flavors and gets rid of bad breath.

Warnings To Be Aware Of

As I mentioned earlier, because of the glittery look of the gel, kids may want their moms to purchase this for them. However, there are some warnings on the label and I would be remiss if I didn’t point out. This should be kept out of the reach of children under 6 years of age. If an amount larger than what is used for brushing teeth is ingested, you should call a poison control center or get medical help.

It is not recommended for children under the age of 2, and only a pea sized amount should be used in children under age 6. Supervise your children, and ask your dentist before using in children under the age of 2.

In Closing

I love Crest Whitening Expressions Cinnamon Rush toothpaste. It cleans my teeth, freshens my breath, and contains fluoride to prevent cavities. I remember using a ton of toothpaste on my brush when I was a child, and because this tastes so good, it is my opinion that it would be easy for children to swallow or even eat this toothpaste. Please be aware of the warnings.

I have not found Cinnamon Rush in the larger tubes that other Crest varieites are available in. That makes it a bit more expensive, so watch for sales. The bottle tends to be higher priced, and I normally pay around $2.00 on sale.
