A Dialogue with Cinderella

Fairy Godmother

Me: I see you there and wonder if you can hear us? You always look so beautiful in your blue ballroom gown, so perfect. I wonder what you think of my family or me for that matter.

Cinderella: I do hear everything and I truly enjoy listening to all of you daily, especially you since you spend the most time with me.

Me: Why?

Cinderella: It’s just interesting to see things from a different view and to listen to the thoughts of others, but mostly I enjoy sitting here on your kitchen window sill looking at your family and hearing so many different conversations and wonder what new turns will happen today. Sort of like my personal soap opera.

Me: Well, then you must know that I stare at you too and I often wonder if there is such a thing as a fairy tale and if you were ever a real person? I know that sounds silly you are just a doll on my window sill.

Cinderella: How do you know that I am just a doll? What if I am really sort of reminder on life or what if I am whatever you want me to be?

Me: You have to be a doll or figurine whatever they call you, my daughter got you on her birthday cake as a decoration.

Cinderella: Well, that certainly does not mean I am just a doll what if each of us are specially selected to come into one’s home. There may very well be a reason that I am here.

Me: I can’t believe that, it sounds well, irrational.

Cinderella: Speaking to me now is rational? Well, I can tell you one thing for sure and I really mean it when I say that I am glad that I am here, it gets cold and lonely sitting in a bakery shop waiting to be selected as that special decoration to be placed on a very special cake. And to come home to a very special family.

Me: Why are you here and where were you before you joined our special family?

Cinderella: I was a fairy tale princess for another special family, and I still am. Remember I brought joy to many families that read my story, the poor little stepsister that took care of all the household chores and fetched everything for my ugly stepsisters… Until one day my fairy Godmother came to my rescue and gave me a chance to meet a prince at a ball as long as I was home by midnight… If you think about the story I was not meant to be found, however my prince insisted on finding me by my glass slipper that I had left behind… And he does… We live happily ever after… etc…

Me: Yeah, yeah I know the story. I read the books remember I do have four daughters and we saw the movie, but I still don’t understand two things one is you say that you are not a doll, but you really are. I’m confused about that. Second, you say that you are still a fairy tale princess. What do you mean you are still a princess?

Cinderella: I will try to explain although I can’t be certain that you will understand. Maybe you will. I never said I wasn’t a doll, I just asked how do you know for sure that I am one. You are the one questioning yourself, but anyhow let me try this. You are hear speaking to me now, you often look at me and make comments, ask questions and guess what, I answer you back. Usually you smile at me and I smile back. Sometimes it takes a little longer to get the answer. I help fill in some blanks for you. I know this because you often hold me and always place me back gently as if I did something special. Plus I can tell because you don’t hold the Little Mermaid as often as you hold me. Fairy tales are made to make you hope and wonder for the best. I know some people say that fairy tales are bogus, but everyone has them and that is why people do the things they do. Everyone ultimately wants a happy ending. That is why I am here to always remind you and your family that we can get there. At times it will be tough, but if you try hard enough for anything it can and will be yours. Like the prince found me. I say that I am still a princess, because I remind all of you to strive for happy, successful endings and as long as I am sitting here everyday I am a Princess.

Me: Wow that was an earful. I guess you are right you are not a doll, but kind of like my fairy godmother, just listening to me and giving me inspiration. Thanks for being there. I hope we entertain you here. You will always have a royal seat on my window sill.

Cinderella: Well, madam I do enjoy it here very much and yes at times it is entertaining, I am always here and remember happy thoughts…. You know the key to success and happiness. Never give up. Oh, remember the Little Mermaid she needs some attention also, like we all do.
