Product Review: Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit

chili's, Red Square

There is nothing like a nice big bowl of steaming hot chili on a cold night and what makes the chili taste that much better is that you made it yourself. I do not care very much for canned chili and there is not a good quality brand of one that I would eat on a regular basis.

It had been awhile since I had even bought a can of chili and I was wanting some and I drove over to the local Brookshires and when I went inside the store, I walked down the aisle to look at the brands of chili to decide which one I wanted. I saw the usually brands such as Hormel, Austex, Bush’s, just to name a few and then I spotted a chili mix that you prepare yourself. I took the product off the shelf and read what all the steps were to prepare this at home and the directions were simple as a b c . I purchased the chili mix and gathered the very few ingredients I needed to prepare this with at home.

I followed the directions on the back and soon I had a homemade pot of chili simmering on my stovetop. The aroma that filled my home was very enticing and I could not wait to have a sample. After the chili simmered about twenty minutes, I grabbed a spoon and dug in. With the very first spoonful, I was tasting the best chili I had ever eaten. The fresh ground meat I had placed in the mix was bursting with chili flavor and all of the unique and variety of spices blended all together made my mouth and tummy want more. The flavor of everything together had a unique kick to it that the canned versions do not have.

Carroll Shelby’s Chili Mix comes in a four ounce paper sack, which is the cutest tiny paper sack I have ever seen. The sack itself looks just like a regular size paper sack. It is the same brownish tan color but it is miniature. On the front of the sack, there is a red square section near the top and maybe one quarter of the way down and inside the red square are the words Carrol Shelby’s and below that in bold white lettering is the word chili and the word kit in smaller letters below that. Underneath these words, there are two small white labels that say, fix it mild, fix it hot.

Inside the tiny bag, there are four individual spice packets. The large one contains the chili powder. The chili powder does not have a lot of heat to it when eaten, but it definitely packs a flavorful punch. There are three tiny packets inside. One contains salt, one has the cayenne pepper flakes and the last one contains mesa, (flour), which lets you add more of a thickness to your chili if you prefer. The first time I made this chili, I used the entire packet of chili seasoning and only half of the cayenne pepper flakes. I also added the entire packet of mesa for thicker chili. The hotter you like your chili, the more of the cayenne pepper flakes you use. Using only half the packet was sufficient enough for my husband and I and we like our chili spicy hot and this is exactly what we got with Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit. The directions are on back and gives suggestions for other ingredients you can add to your ground beef, such as whole tomatoes or a can of pinto beans. The price was $ 3.49 at my local Brookshires.
