Woodworking for Children

Tic Tac Toe, Wood Working, Woodworking

The Magic Whimmydiddle

This is an easy project for anyone to do, and can be part of a fortune telling or magic act. The most dangerous tool involved in this woodworking project is either the nail or the butter knife, you decide. It is a fun project that will introduce children to woodworking, there is nothing to ‘cut’ or actually nail, so it is still relatively safe. This can be done at as early as six years old.

Sailboat

This is for a little older woodworker, but still definitely a children’s project. This project will help introduce your child to different wood breeds, the basic hand tools for woodworking (including saws, a drill, and following a number of patterns. I would probably suggest an age of 12 or older for a project like this, again, supervision is very important!

Sticky Note Holder

This is a cute project for (most) ages that will be a great gift for a Sunday School teacher, a mother’s day present, or just a rainy day craft to keep the little one occupied. No real tools necessary, and glue is your friend for this one. The tutorial has a great idea coloring each popsicle stick the color of a crayon, then crayon sticky notes.

Snowman Fence

In much the same idea as the sticky note holder, these snowmen make for a great Christmas ornament, a great Christmas present, or just another craft to do when it is too cold out to play. The tools are simple enough for most all to use, and it will be a nice addition to the tree.

Magnet Holder

If your fridge has run out of places for magnets, then this is a great idea for a wood project for 7-9 year olds (per the author). The hardest part will be staining the wood, and using tacky glue to stick the metal plate to the wood base. You could even turn the snowman fence into a magnet, paint the board from the magnet holder in a Christmas theme, and it is an even more versatile gift.

Chinese Juggling Sticks

Wood working with tape and glue, and a great skill to learn when you are done! These juggling sticks are popular with jugglers, and will be a hit with your little ones after they’ve made them. The project is much easier than learning to juggle them, but it will keep them occupied while they learn – make sure they play outside away from any windows! 🙂

Firecrackers

Except for the drilling, this is a super easy woodworking project suitable for most any age. Using old, wooden spools would make this a completely kid friendly craft!

Wooden Scrapbook

This is a great craft, that is it is pre-drilled and cut, will be a very unique scrapbook that will last for a long, long time. Have your friends sign it after your camping trick, and get the pictures developed later.

Felt Wall Hanging

This is also a kid-friendly craft that can be done easily if the rod is pre-cut to keep little hands safe. I think that this would be a great way to display awards too, if light enough wood can be found for it, and you never want to frame the award.

Stacking Tic Tac Toe

A great way to teach the little ones about wood working, and a way to have them make their own version of Tic Tac Toe with no tools. This is a great game, and a great way to teach them how to play it.

Enjoy these woodcrafting projects for smaller kids, and look for the rest of them soon! 🙂
