Nylon webbed lawn chairs are a popular form of portable lawn chairs that tend to need their nylon webbing periodically replaced. Thankfully, replacing the nylon webbing is easier than you may think. Here is how:
Materials Needed to Repair Nylon Webbed Lawn Chairs
In order to complete repairs to a nylon webbed lawn chair you will need to gather together the following materials from your local home improvement or hardware store;
1 screwdriver
1 pair scissors
1 utility knife
1 metal tape measure
1 pencil
1 pair safety goggles
1 can outdoor spray paint (optional)
1 piece sand paper (optional)
1 box sheet metal screws or metal clips
1 bottle penetrating oil
1 awl
1 roll replacement nylon webbing (sometimes sold as a kit with screws and or metal clips included)
Step 1: Dismantling the Nylon Webbed Chair
Begin this project by turning the nylon webbed lawn chair upside down and examining the areas where the nylon webbing meets the metal frame. Some nylon webbed lawn chair manufacturers attach the nylon webbing to the metal frame with metal clips and others use metal screws. If your nylon webbed chair has screws, use a screw driver to remove all the screws in the damaged area. If your nylon webbed chair has metal clips, use a flat head screw driver to pry off all the metal clips in the damaged area.
Some screws may be heavily rusted and thus difficult to remove. If this is the case with your nylon webbed lawn chair, simply apply a little penetrating oil to the affected screw and allow it to sit like that for a few minutes. The penetrating oil should make the rusted screw’s removal go smoother. After you have removed the screws or clips, you should be able to remove the damaged nylon webbing with ease. Once the damaged nylon is removed, inspect the lawn chair’s frame for any rust. Depending on what you find, you may opt to sand down and repaint any rusted areas at this time.
Step 2: Measuring and Cutting the Nylon Webbing
With the old nylon webbing removed, take out your tape measure and pencil. Measure the distance between matching attachment slots located on the nylon webbed lawn chair’s frame. Remember that most nylon chairs have a weave pattern, so you will need to measure distances between both the vertical and horizontal straps.
It is imperative to note that if the lawn chair manufacturer used screws to attach the nylon webbing you will need to add three inches per nylon webbing strip onto your measurements. On the other hand, if the manufacturer used metal clips to attach the nylon webbing to the frame, you will need to tack on 1 ½ inches per strip onto your measurements. Measure and cut the replacement vertical and horizontal strips of nylon webbing accordingly.
Step 3: Installing the Horizontal Nylon Webbing
Continue by installing the horizontal straps first. Attachment methods differ based on whether or not your lawn chair has attachment clips or screws.
If you are using screws to attach the horizontal nylon webbing, fold one end of the strap over twice to form an upside down “V” or pointed shape. Proceed by taking out your tape measure and pencil. Measure ½ inches down from the pointed tip and make a pencil mark. Then take out an awl and punch a hole in the nylon webbing exactly where you made your pencil mark. Continue by inserting a metal screw into the hole and then screwing the nylon webbing onto the lawn chair’s metal frame at the attachment slot. Now that one end of the nylon webbing strap is attached to the chair, stretch the strap until it reaches the opposite side of the nylon webbed lawn chair’s frame. Make a point and hole in the strap like you did previously and attach it to the chair.
If you are using metal clips to attach the horizontal webbing, you will need to wrap ¾ inch of the material over the smooth edge of the metal clip before snapping the clip over the chair’s attachment slots. Attach one end of the nylon webbing to the lawn chair’s frame and then stretch the nylon until it reaches the opposite side of the frame. Then attach that end of the strap in the same manner as described above. Once all the horizontal webbing is in place you may proceed to step four.
Step 4: Weaving the Vertical Nylon Webbing into Place
The simplest way to weave the vertical nylon webbing into place is to start at the edge of the lawn chair’s seat. Attach the first end of the nylon webbing to the metal frame as described in step three. Then weave the nylon webbing through the seat’s horizontal straps making sure to pass the strap behind the bar at the back of the seat as you work your way to the top of the lawn chair’s back. Once you reach the top of the chair with the nylon webbing, attach the strap’s end to the chair’s frame in the manner described in step three. Alternating your weaving pattern, repeat this procedure until all the vertical nylon webbing is into place. After all the replacement nylon webbing is in place, the lawn chair is ready for use.
