Grooming a Lhasa apso is simply a matter of having the right tools for the job and of course some patience. If you don’t know how to groom a Lhasa apso then it can be kind of difficult the first few times but with some effort both you and your dog can become comfortable in the grooming process with time.

Tools Needed for Grooming a Lhasa Apso:

Brush

Slicker Brush

Wide Tooth Metal Comb

Nail Clippers

Spray Bottle (½ Cup Cream Rinse to 1 Gallon Water Diluted for Spray Bottle)

Blow Dryer

Shampoo

Scissors

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 1: Begin by brushing the Lhasa apso’s coat thoroughly to remove any mats or tangles before bathing. The bath will sometimes make the hair even more difficult to manage so it’s important to get all tangles out before the bath.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 2: Using a pair of scissors, trim away any mats that cannot be easily brushed out and also begin trimming the hair between the pads on the paws. Make sure you do not cut the pads just the excess hair in between the pads when grooming a Lhasa apso.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 3: Place the dog in the tub and pour or spray water over him in a downward motion. Using a mixture of shampoo and water that has been premixed in a bucket, slowly pour the shampoo over the dog also in a downward motion. With Lhasa apsos it’s important to resist the urge to scrub the coat which can tangle the hair.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 4: Rinse the coat with warm water to remove all shampoo. Continue to rinse until the water runs clear and then using your hands in a downward motion squeeze any excess water from the coat.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 5: Using a towel gently squeeze as much water out of the Lhasa apso’s coat as you can and then prepare the dog for a blow dry.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 6: Blow dry the coat of the Lhasa apso starting with one layer at a time and smooth coat out as you go using a comb and some detangle spray. I like to use Unleash Pure Joy Shine and Detangle Grooming Spray. Spray each section with detangler and then using the comb to straighten the hair gently blow dry each section. It’s important to make sure when grooming a Lhasa apso that you thoroughly dry the hair around the paws, behind the hind legs, and around the ears.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 7: Another important step in the grooming process is to trim the nails on the dog. Do not cut the nails too short!

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 8: To keep the Lhasa apso’s hair out of his eyes you have a few options. You can use a barrette or a hair band. Gently comb down the hair into a center part and use a hair tie to hold the hair back.

How to Groom a Lhasa Apso Step 9: Finally, use a slicker brush to finish off the look. Brush the entire coat one last time with the slicker to keep any fly aways or frizz down.
