With pop culture roaring through our televisions and radios, Americans cannot help but want to be involved in the culture that is hip-hop…the most prevalent dance form in the country to date. Behind the music videos with women in little to nothing and “ganstas” wearing large bling is a culture that represents the minority. Hip hop is not just dance, but it is culture. Developed in the Bronk during the 1970’s, hip hop was an outlet for minorities. It gave them freedom, pride, and ambition; all three of these ideals were either directly or indirectly denied to them based on their color. Hip hop crossed racial borders allowing everybody to be involved. It is a huge puzzle piece to American culture.
So do you want to learn hip-hop? The culture, the dance, the style, is vivid and sexy. Where do you? In San Diego, there are so many fantastic dance studios and gyms where you take a hip-hop class at any level. Here is a list of where to find your nearest hip-hop class:
1. The Culture Shock Dance Center located in Midtown, it offers the best classes in the city with its educated teachers and diverse dancers. The specialize in hip-hop. Such classes offered are cardio hip-hop, jazzercise, break dancing, tribal belly dancing, and so much more. There are three different levels for each type of dance and they are always offering great specials such as classes for only ten dollars. If you decide to become a regular they give deals such as four classes being $42 and the standard price for drop-ins is fourteen dollars. This is a must do if you want the true hip-hop experience.

2. If you are in the College area, I suggest that you try out the Academy of Performing Arts studio. They offer some awesome hip hop classes in the afternoons between noon and two, plus an introductory hip-hop course in the evenings. All of the teachers are professional dancers, which makes it easier to learn because they won’t mind telling you that you are doing it and wrong and point in the right direction to be successful. The prices for classes vary by the month…but the current prices are $14 for drop in, $42 for four classes, and $125 for the month, but this ends May 31st and must be used up by then. Make sure and call them to find out what the current pricings are when June rolls our way.

3. A Time to Dance, Dance Studio on San Diego, offers professional classes for beginners focusing on discipline and form. They emphasize working out your entire body to create a successful product. They offer hip hop on Wednesday evenings from seven to eight. Unfortunately, there are no drop ins and you must buy a package deal for $45 which gives you four classes to attend throughout the month.
