5 Ways to Celebrate Elvis Presley’s Birthday

Jailhouse Rock, Karaoke Songs

Are you looking for a fun way to shake off the winter blues? If so, you may want to consider celebrating Elvis Presley’s birthday in January. The late king would have turned 78 in 2013. Based on my experience, there are several great ways to pay homage to him all month long. Here’s a passing glance at five of them:

Make Sandwiches

Want a tasty way to celebrate the King of Rock-n-Roll’s birthday? Well then, bust out the peanut butter and banana sandwiches for lunch. They were said to be one of his favorites. Of course there are many different ways to make the sandwich. Therefore, you could eat a different one every day of the month. My favorite is the one used by the sweetheart of the south, Paula Deen. You can find her version of the classic sandwich posted on the Food Network’s website.

Don Shoes and a Sneer

Another way to pay homage to the king is to bust out the blue suede shoes and practice your Elvis lip curl. I can still remember how my mother would get misty-eyed and sigh every time he’d make that face. Then she’d whisper something about how he could park his blue suede shoes under her bed anytime he’d pleased. You can typically purchase a pair of the shoes through select costume shops for around $40.

Swivel Your Hips

Don’t want to wear the shoes or eat the sandwiches? Perhaps you’d rather spend an hour or two swiveling your hips to some of his songs instead. After all, the man did raise quite a ruckus with all those gyrations. Should you feel the need for a little hip swiveling lesson, grab a hula hoop from the local discount store and give it a go. It will have you in tip-top, hip shaking form in no time.

Build a Jungle Room

Would you rather engage in a celebration activity that is wilder than a hip shake? If so, I’d suggest creating your own jungle room. If you ask me, it was one of the more colorful rooms at Graceland. All you really need in order to make one of your own is a good supply of animal prints, faux fur and greenery. Need a bit more inspiration than that to get started? Even though the king is gone, you can still check out pictures of his former wild abode on the Elvis website. They should help to give you all the inspiration that you need to get started.

King Sing-a-Long

Last but not least, you could always celebrate the king’s birthday by downing a few blue Hawaiian cocktails and singing karaoke. Songs to consider singing are “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, “Blue Hawaii”, “Jailhouse Rock” and “Burning Love.
