Mexico: 120 U.S. Citizens Murdered in 2011

Cultural tourists seek out traces of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations, while those in need of rest and relaxation head for the tourist resorts and while away the time with mariachi music, the famous Mexican hospitality, and visits to gorgeous beaches. In stark contrast to the famous vacation destinations within the Estados Unidos Mexicanos are the State Department’s travel warning. A February 8, 2012, travel warning concedes that while “millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business,” reportedly 120 Americans have been killed in 2011.

Tip: Stick to tourist resorts and only venture out in groups to sightseeing destinations. Exercise extreme caution when visiting Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, and the states of Coahuila and Durango.

Egypt: Impromptu Violent Demonstrations

The Arab Republic of Egypt is a mix of modern marvels and evidences of ancient civilizations. The famed Nile River, Sahara Desert, and Giza pyramid complex are just some of the tourist attractions that appeal to Americans. A February 2012 State Department travel information posting warns that “politically motivated rallies and demonstrations are likely to occur” before and after any elections. These rallies frequently turn violent. In addition, “crowded tourist areas have been the target of terrorist activities.”

Tip: Avoid large groups, such as those found at soccer matches, as they may erupt in impromptu demonstrations. Do not attend demonstrations or even watch them from the sidelines. Stick to Luxor and similar tourist destinations, as long as the locales offer strong security procedures.

Australia: Highest Number of Deadly Shark Attacks

Did you know that the United States leads the world in the number of shark attacks? The University of Florida has tallied a total of 980 shark attacks in the U.S. as of January 30, 2012. Of these, only 36 attacks were fatal. In contrast, Australia had a total of 488 shark attacks, but 144 were deadly. The most dangerous vacation sports are New South Wales and Queensland, while the famous vacation destinations in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, and the Cocos Islands are the least deadly.

Tip: Look for warning signs on the beaches and stick closely to the guard towers. Ask about shark sightings before getting into the water. Steer clear of sites with high numbers of shark sightings.

Honduras: Highest Murder Rate in the World

Situated in Central America, Honduras is a premier destination for eco-tourists in search of high biodiversity. Rain forests, cloud forests, and occasional Mayan artifacts offer plenty to see and explore. Even so, the State Department issued a January 2012 travel update warning of land mines along the border areas with Nicaragua. “U.S. citizens have been the victims of a wide range of crimes, including murder, kidnapping, rape, assault, and property crimes,” officials further caution. The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime warns that Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world: 82.1, according to 2010 figures released by national police agencies. (Mind you, Brazil may have a total murder count of 43,909, but only features a 22.7 murder rate.)

Tip: Do not take solo trips into the backcountry, save money with economy transportation, or travel at night. Stick with organized tour groups whenever possible. Opt for resort town accommodations versus the cheaper but more dangerous private rentals.
