Summer is a time of fun and relaxation. However, after 3 months of no educational input, children often summer from “summer slide,” where they lose some of their academic skills. In order to help your child stay above the curve for the next school year, parents should consider enrolling their children in an academic based summer camp. WOW! Science Camp is a science camp held at The United Methodist Church. It is a one week, half day program where a different science topic is explored through hands on activities each day. Topics include geology, chemistry, zoology, astronomy, and health. Children 3 ½ to 4th grade in the 2010-2011 school year are eligible to participate; special classes/accommodations for children with special needs. Wonder-Space Computer and Technology Camp is a day camp held at The Woodlands Recreation Center. The Woodlands, Texas location offers a variety of different computer classes where children are taught about computer programming using math skills at their individual level thanks to low class-teacher ratios. There is also a general math skills class offered. Campers need to be age 7 – 17. Classes vary by age and week. Some of the classes include game design fundamentals, web design, build your own computer, and much more. Camp is held June 13 to August 5. Camp time varies by class. Camp Invention uses science, math, history, and art to spark creativity and inventiveness. Campers will explore five themed modules each day. They are then challenged to come up with their own ideas to create, build, test, and experience the invention process. Children entering grades 1 – 6 are eligible to participate; children with special needs can be accommodated. Camp locations in The Woodlands include Woodlands Preparatory, June 27 – July 1 for $240 and Christ Church United Methodist, August 1 – August 5 for $215. Scholarship help may be available. Summer Brain Camp by Oxford Learning Center on College Park Dr will hold camp session to help kids of all ages work on their math skills and language art skills. Classes taught depend on each child’s individual needs, but plans include Beat Math, Language for Thinking, Effective Writing, Group Dynamics, Study Skills and Computer Brain Games. Camp Classes are held June 6 – August 11, Monday – Thursday, 9:30 AM – Noon or 1 PM – 3:30 PM. World Explorer Camp held at Lone Star College is a wonderful social studies education camp for kids age 12 – 16. Campers will study the planet and how people live all around the world. Classes are held Monday – Thursday, 1 PM – 5 PM with sessions June 13 – June 16, June 27 – June 30, July 18 – July 21, OR August 1 – August 4. Each session is $89. Additional camps with different themes are available.
