10 Top Tips for College Exam Studying

Tips for College Students

Studying for college exams can be a very intimidating process for new college students that are new to college level testing. As a current college junior who has finished his major I know all kinds of study tips that will help anyone obtain academic success. I understand full well going to the library for hours on end can actually be hurtful for your grades, having the right balance is necessary for good mental health. This article will look at 10 study tips for college students.

1. Take accurate detailed notes

Having easy to understand and read notes will make studying 100% easier if you do not have to go through your book finding facts and important information. Studying starts in the classroom, so take the best notes you can for an easier time later.

2. Caffeine

If you cannot concentrate then long hours of studying is worthless. I personally have a cup of coffee before I study to help stay awake and interested in the subject.

3. Have a study partner

College students nowadays have more distractions than ever, such as their cell phone, Facebook, email, instant messenger, and games. We are all guilty of spending hours in the library and spending about half of that time on pointless tasks. Having a study partner will keep your attention focused on the material rather than distractions.

4. Exercise

Taking a break to exercise can actually clear up your mind and give you more energy to better focus on studying than other random thoughts.

5. Go for extra help if needed

First year students get this one wrong all the time; going for extra help with either a tutor or a professor is a great way to increase your knowledge of any subject you may not be entirely sure on.

6. Read the material

Although this may seem self evident a good majority of students will not bother to read the material. Often times college exams include material not covered in class; therefore the readings are essential.

7. Take a 15 minute break every hour of studying

“What taking a break, I don’t have time for that!” Taking breaks can actually help concentration in the long run; studying material straight can cause your brain to not soak up as much information. When I study I like to take a break every hour to recharge and get refocused on the material.

8. Study in a quiet place

Even if you hate the library it may be the best place to study in; in college roommates can be distracting and annoying which can cause your studying to be futile. Make the most of the time you have to study by concentrating entirely on subject and not background distractions.

9. Prioritize

College students have a lot on their mind from classes to personal worries; however learning to prioritize the tasks at hand can make studying much more effective. When studying for your calculus test you should only be thinking about calculus not about anything else that may distract you.

10. Take advantage of peer tutors

Unless you have straight A’s tutors can be a great free resource (if provided by the school) to learn the material in a more efficient manner. The tutors already went through the class, so they know how to prepare for certain tests; do not waste your time trying to figure out what will be on the test or understanding difficult material on your own, enlist the help of a campus tutor.
