Ceilings are often the most overlooked element in interior design. A beautifully designed room, deserves to be capped off with an equally beautiful ceilings. Though reaching high can mean extra work, the “Wow!” factor decorative ceilings offer to guests will be well worth the effort. Here are some decorating ideas to get you inspired to start looking up.

Texture
There are three main types of texture. Almost everyone is familiar with “popcorn”, the type that looks like little globs sprayed on. “Knock-down” is a special technique that create depth where the texture is sprayed on mostly like popcorn but than is smoothed out to create a pattern. Painting

Fabric
Gathering fabric is great for rooms with an old world or vintage feel as well, though not as easy to keep clean as wallpaper. Attach a medallion in the center of the room and work your way out to corners, gathering the fabric as you go to create the flow and look that you envision.

Wood
Fake beams or trim designs can be used to add decorative touches to ceilings. This is a great option if you have other custom woodwork or molding throughout the room.

Why simply paint a ceiling when you can mimic the same depth and texture above as you do in your flooring? From tin tiles, to ceramic, to custom mosaic designs, the possibilities are endless.

Metal Sheets
Along the same lines as tin tiles, adding full metal sheets to the ceiling can add an instant industrial feel. Great in contemporary kitchens that use the same for counter tops or back-splashes.

Skylights
Normal or custom stained glass skylights add literal brightness to a room. This option can require extensive renovation though, including electrical hazards, so always consult an expert before delving into a DIY project.

Mirrors
Another modern option to add depth and light into a space is through the placement of mirrors. Hang them on the ceiling, in full sheets or tiles, to bring an eye-opening atmosphere into the room.

The more customizable ideas for decorating a ceiling is to hire a local artist to paint a custom mural above your head. If you want to be a part of the process, rent a projector or buy stencils to create your own personal expression in the room.
