10 Great Cary Grant Movies

Cary Grant, James Coburn, North by Northwest, Robert Mitchum

Cary Grant was a prolific actor in a four decade career. As such I can’t say that I seen all of his movies and can’t term this article “10 Best” but rather “10 Great”, with the author determining that they are great. Without dragging out an already too long winded introduction here are the movies in no particular order:

The Philadelphia Story – A bride and groom, a jealous ex, and a reported find themselves in a convoluted mess of a love story. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Katherine Hepburn headline the cast.

His Girl Friday – A ‘war between the sexes’ movie with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell portraying divorcing spouses who are forced to work together. Howard Hawks directs.

Notorious – A great movie that is perhaps lesser known than North by Northwest, but is at least in the same league. Alfred Hitchcock directs Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains among others. Notorious is a suspenseful spy movie that is certainly worth checking out.

To Catch a Thief – A Hitchcock directed thriller with a dash of comedy that tells the story of a former jewel thief that may be getting back to his old ways. Cary Grant stars alongside Grace Kelly.

An Affair to Remember – This movie is remembered for two basic reasons: Cary Grant being in the cast and its appearance in the more recent hit “Sleepless in Seattle”. Movie is great for date night with the little lady as it isn’t that tortuous to watch.

North by Northwest – Alfred Hitchcock directs this classic movie. Cary Grant stars alongside the stunning Eva Marie Saint in this movie of mistaken identity. Everyone is at least vaguely familiar with Grant racing a crop dusting airplane through a field and to a lesser extent the racing across the faces of Mount Rushmore. As an aside, is it just me or is a beautiful woman hanging from the rock face of a dead president hot? Perhaps Grant’s best movie.

Charade – Stellar cast includes Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn. Movie is based upon a widow who is wanted for money that her husband stole during WW II.

The Grass is Greener – Cary Grant and Robert Mitchum square off in this love story, of a sort.

The Bishop’s Wife – A priest needs assistance with building a new church and with his marriage. An angel (Grant) is sent down to assist the Bishop at Christmas time making this a good holiday movie for the family.

Suspicion – Hitchcock directs Grant in this suspense that tells the story of a wife who finds that her husband may be a killer. And she may be next.

My Favorite Wife – OK, I’m adding this as an extra for two reasons: an intriguing title and a funny script with the unfortunate Grant that makes the movie worth watching.
