Tips for Having an Ice Skating Party

Depending where you live, you want the party to be between the months of late October to early January. Here’s how to put together an ice skating party.

Making a Skating Rink or Renting One

If you are renting a skating rink, call your local facilities to set up a date. The dates when skating parties are big are in late October and early January, so don’t be surprised if people book months in advance. If you are going to make a skating rink in your backyard, check your city to see if you need a permit. If it is a go, make sure to do so when the weather is between 10 to 26 degrees. Flood your backyard with 8 gallons of water and and add ice cubes to help it frost over. Put up a barrier to give the rink shape, like a stack of bricks or an easy to put up fence. Give it two days then add salt to the top before adding 2 more gallons of water. Brush the top of the rink with a broom, and cover with snow or a white cover until the day of the party.

Beverages

For beverages, serve several different varieties. The first, a mainstay for any ice skating party, is hot cocoa. Serve with whipped cream and shaved toppings. The second beverage is warm lemonade with fresh lemon slices. The third is three different kinds of soda pops. The fourth is milkshakes: vanilla, chocolate or strawberries. The fifth is fresh tap water mixed with seltzer water. The sixth is flavored ices and the seventh is eggnog.

Cold Sandwiches

For food you want cold sandwiches, which taste better as they get colder. There are a variety of cold sandwiches to consider: bacon, lettuce and tomato, liverwurst with fried onions on a baguette, chicken salad in pita pockets, fried pork chops with shredded apples and onions with mayonnaise, and baked shrimp with marinade on French bread. Serve on real plates, not paper plates, which may get soggy due to the temperature in the skating rink. Also serve with plenty of napkins.

Ice Cream

Make sure to spoon the ice cream out of the carton and into a bowl that have been kept in the freezer overnight. The carton may get soggy due to the temperature of the indoor skating rink or the one outside. Another tip is to make sure you serve the ice cream in plastic bowls and spoons and not styrofoam bowls and spoons. Styrofoam makes ice cream melt faster. Lastly, make sure to bring the ice cream out only when you are going to serve it.
