There are hundreds of gyms and fitness centers in every state. I have used the YMCA in the past but it can get expensive to go there, especially if you sign up for extras like the swimming pool or tennis lessons. I also went to a local in my hometown with my mom but eventually stopped going there because they didn’t have many different machines and it was a little rundown. Then I moved for college and I found a new gym, part of a chain, that I had never heard of. It was called Planet Fitness.
Planet Fitness cost me $15 a month, plus $4 for unlimited tanning. There was a one time start up fee of $29. Recenty, I upgraded to the “black card”. With it, you pay $1.00 instead of $2.00 for drinks from the cooler, which includes water, gatorade, juices, and sodas. Tanning is also included and unlimited plus you can bring a guest to work out with you for free. This program changed my monthy fee from $15+$4 to $19.99. That’s right. 99 cents more to get half price drinks, free guest passes, and a free t-shirt. The next closest gym in my area is Gold’s Gym. There cheapest membership there (at the time I called at least) was $29.99 a month. That did not include tanning. Also, I would have to pay a $99 start up fee.
Planet Fitness is a great gym for the average person. They have a machine to work any part of your body that you could want from your biceps and triceps, to your calf and thigh muscles, to your abs and back. There are also mats if you want to do classic situps or pushups, but I have found they are ideal for yoga and stretching too. Treadmills, elliptical machines, and bikes are also available. All the equipment is well maintained for the most part. Sometimes a treadmill is broken, but there are 39 other ones available. I have always been able to get a tanning bed when I wanted and those are also maintained and cleaned well. The employees at Planet Fitness are very nice and helpful to everyone. They say hello and goodbye to you too which is nice. There is also a pizza night and a bagel morning offered for free every once in a while.
Planet Fitness also offers a few perks. There are big locker rooms, one for girls and one for guys. The locker rooms have bathrooms as well as showers and nice lockable lockers. I sometimes leave things in there with no lock and I have never had anything stolen. Another nice thing they have is spray bottles. People are asked to wipe down the machine with this sanitizer after they use it to prevent the spread of germs and such. This gym also has music playing, not loud enough to annoy you, but loud enough you can listen if you want. It is usually 90’s or current pop and rock music. They have tvs also with about 10 different channels available for your viewing pleasure. If you are on a treadmill, bike, or elliptical, you can plug in your headphones to a little gadget so you can hear the tv of your choice as well. The final perk Planet Fitness has is a bowl of tootsie rolls promoting their colors.
So in my opinion, if this gym is in your area, you ought to check it out. They have alot of fitness options, the people are very nice, and their prices are inexpensive. Check out planetfitness.com to see if there is one near you.
