A new study published in Nutrition Research suggests that the old stand by – eggs are the best choice when it comes to what to eat for breakfast. A study carried out on 21 men showed that men who ate a breakfast consisting of three scrambled eggs and a piece and a half of white toast ate 400 fewer calories over the next twenty-four hours than men who ate a bagel with low fat cream cheese and yogurt. They also had higher levels of a hormone called ghrelin in their bloodstream after eating the egg breakfast. Ghrelin tells the body it’s still hungry and to keep on eating – which is not the effect most people want when they’re trying to lose weight.

The Healthiest Breakfast Food: Why is Eating Eggs So Beneficial?

Eggs are a good source of high quality protein which helps to reduce hunger – and reduce the risk of overindulging later in the day. Eating eggs for breakfast has other benefits too. Egg yolk is a good source of choline – a compound that’s needed by every cell in the body and is vitally important for normal brain and nerve cell function. A deficiency of choline can lead to fatigue, insomnia, and memory problems. Eating an egg in the morning can not only help with weight loss – but it could help you think more clearly too.

Shouldn’t You Eat an Egg in the Morning?

Eggs take almost no time to prepare and can even be cooked in the microwave. On days that you have more time, make an omelet and fill it full of vegetables for extra antioxidants. Keep hard boiled eggs in the refrigerator to take to the office when you’re in a rush. Eggs are always a good choice for breakfast.
