Ten Greatest Country Songs of the 2000’s

Any greatest songs countdown is subjective to the individual tastes of the reviewer. That being said, I have compiled my own list of the top ten greatest country songs of the 2000’s decade, from 2000 – 2009. Feel free to comment on what songs should have made the list! Here are the songs and artists, in random order:

“Remember When” – Alan Jackson – Jackson’s 2004 masterfully-written tribute to his wife recalled the sentimental moments of their relationship, their struggles, the births of their children, and a final tender testimony to how their love will remain strong and true in the years to come.

“Redneck Woman” – Gretchen Wilson – Wilson’s sassy first (and only) #1 song debuted like a whirlwind in 2004, momentarily changing the face of country music, and becoming the anthem for all female country fans that year.

“Forever and For Always” – Shania Twain – In 2003, Twain released her single “Forever and For Always” in conjunction with a commercial ad promotion promoting the song. The song, although not one of her most successful on the charts, is a simple and touching tribute to enduring love.

“One More Day” – Diamond Rio – One of the earliest greatest songs on this list, “One More Day” was released in the fall of 2000. Often used in commemorations to victims of the 9-11 attacks in 2001, this song is a wistful memorial, proclaiming what one would do if they had just one more single day with their lost loved one.

“Anything But Mine” – Kenny Chesney – Though Chesney’s career took off in the 2000’s, one of his greatest songs by far is the nostalgic-sounding end-of-summer anthem “Anything But Mine.” The production of this 2005 song skillfully blends the vocals and instrumental melody, creating a feeling in the listener of tanned skin, breezes off the water, and sunsets from a boardwalk.

“American Soldier” – Toby Keith – Released in early 2004, “American Soldier” tells the touching first-person story of a patriotic career soldier, heading off to deployment, his sense of duty for his country, and his overall love for his wife and children. According to Wikipedia, this song spent four weeks at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country charts.

“Travelin’ Soldier” – Dixie Chicks – Although written and covered by previous performers, the Dixie Chicks took their 2003 version of this simple, heart-wrenching song to #1 on the charts. The musicality of the backing strings and the style of the military drum rhythm enhance the classic lyrics in this retelling of a young Vietnam War soldier who falls in love with a local high school girl.

“I’m Movin’ On” – Rascal Flatts – Another early-in-the-decade release (2001), this slow and simple ballad touched the hearts of many with its sincere lyrics about moving on and accepting one’s new place in life.

“I Told You So” – Keith Urban – Released as a single in 2007, “I Told You So” is one of Urban’s edgier, more rock-oriented songs. With a pounding bass-line that builds throughout the song, catchy lyrics, and an extended rock solo ending, this is truly one of Urban’s greatest jams – in every sense of the word.

“Letter to Me” – Brad Paisley – If only we could go back in time and tell ourselves back then what we know now. Paisley uses this concept as the basis of “Letter to Me” (2007), a heartfelt self-reflective letter to the days of one’s youth, addressing teenage worries and concerns, reminding that life will be so much better in the years to come.
