Red Carpet Wedding Idea

When my husband and I set out to plan our wedding, we knew it would be different. Neither of us like the typical, and we knew our wedding just wouldn’t be “us” without some unique touches.

I happen to be a big old movie fan. My husband likes movies–maybe not as much as me–but we knew pretty early on that some sort of movie theme would need to be part of our wedding.

Our first idea involved a black & white movie theme, in which everything in the wedding would be black or white–apparel, linens, flowers, you name it. I really loved the idea, but felt a little sad about the absence of any color in my wedding.

So we came up with a new idea–each table in the reception would be an individual movie. This made it easy to include all of our favorite movies, and turned out to be a fun way to get our guests involved.

One thing I decided very early on was that I wanted small cakes on every table instead of one large cake. Our friend put together beautiful cakes resembling Walk of Fame stars that went on each table. In addition, each table had decorations relating to its movie. Thanks to chicoparty.com we found confetti for just about every table, and we put together additional decorations ourselves.

We ended up with 10 tables:

My Fair Lady
This was one of the harder ones, but it’s one of my favorite movies so I had to include it. I found small baskets at Goodwill and some artificial purple flowers at a craft store. I also used some of the small accessories from the ‘My Fair Lady’ Barbies I have at home.

The Wizard of Oz
I found black witch hat confetti which worked perfectly, and my husband found us some yellow rubber brick pieces for free. We used them to create a yellow brick road down the middle of the table.

The Sound of Music
Music note confetti worked well, and I found some artificial white flowers, somewhat resembling Edelweiss, that I placed randomly on the table. I also found some music note ribbon that we ran down the center.

Indiana Jones
My husband printed an ‘Indiana Jones’ looking map on some parchment paper and connected them with red ribbon. We also sprinkled snake confetti, and we found ‘Indiana Jones’ Mad Libs for our guests to fill out.

Star Wars
Thanks to my brother in law, this table features some very cool mini ‘Star Wars’ ships. We also found a ‘Star Wars’ Mad Lib book and outer-space confetti.

The Birds
I was a little hesitant to do a horror movie table, but I was careful with who I seated there. We painstakingly cut out dozens of bird silhouettes on black paper and scattered them all over the table. It had a dramatic effect.

Sunset Blvd.
Easy, I just found some Sunset Blvd. signs at http://hollywoodmegastore.com/ .

Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirate confetti, pirate flags, gold coins, and a compass. A very entertaining table.

Mary Poppins
I used pink umbrella confetti which I’m pretty sure was for a baby shower. My mother is a talented artist and drew a couple of the actual chalk pavement pictures from the movie onto 8×10 card stock which we placed in the middle of the table.

Grease
I found a set of small paper records at a party supply store which we scattered around the table, along with some music note confetti.

Jurassic Park
Another project: we cut dinosaur footprints out of some card stock and ran them along the middle of the table. We also found some dinosaur confetti and small dinosaur 3D puzzles for some added entertainment.

Back to the Future
This one got complicated. My husband made tire tracks using a toy car tire and ink, and created flames out of yellow cellophane.

The head table was the “Directors” table with megaphones, stars, and black and white directors chairs for my husband and I.

For our appetizers, we served tubs of popcorn (tubs from Amazon, popcorn from the dollar store!) and mini boxes of movie candy. We had a number of movie decorations throughout, and our small two-tiered cake featured two mini Oscar statuettes as the topper. I also found small movie clapboard photo holders to use as place card holders and favors.

Our invitations were designed by one of my bridesmaids and were made to look like a movie ticket, announcing the premier of a movie (our wedding!) with a tear-off portion to use as the response card.

Our wedding went surprisingly well, given the number of details. The tables were set up exactly the way we wanted by our caterers and the guests really seemed to enjoy the movie theme, the popcorn and candy, and the entertainment on each table.

So if you’re planning your own movie themed wedding, be sure you’re willing to follow through. It’s the little details that will make it or break it. It will require some work and creativity, but it’s definitely worth it in the end to have a unique, memorable wedding. And most of all, just have fun!
