Lemonade Diet – Master Cleanse Recipe & Directions

When I was at work the other day, a friend of mine came in and told me he was going on a fast. I was a little surprised considering who it was coming from. He’s not the A-typical health nut type of guy. So I asked him what kind of fast it was.

He told me it was the Master Cleanse, and the last time he did the cleanse, he lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks.
He said, “It’s easy to follow, fairly simple, and you won’t feel hungry.” I decided to look into it and test it out for my self.

According to the Wikipedia website: The Master Cleanse, also known as the Lemon Cleanse and the Maple Syrup Diet, is a detoxification program created by the alternative medicine performer Stanley Burroughs in 1941. It was made popular when Peter Glickman who decided to promote Burroughs’ regimen, to a modern audience in 1991. Burroughs states that it aids in the removal of harmful, nonspecific toxins from within the body, as well as fat. It’s a cure for ulcers and a general panacea resulting in “the correction of all disorders.”

Does it work?
It will work if you follow the fast. You will loose weight on any fast. It’s just a mater of adjusting your calorie intake. However, The best thing about The Master cleanse is, its not really a fast. It is more like a liquid diet. You will consume between 650 -1500 calories per day from the lemonade concoction. You will need to determine how many calories you should drink per day as this will depend on how much weight you need to loose according to your (BMI) body mass index.

For her role in Dream Girls, Beyonce Knowles reportedly lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks due to the diet according to Celebrity Diet Doctor. Other Celebrities like Robin Quivers, Howard Stern’s side kick, said she used it on several occasions to loose weight.

The first thing you do before the Master Cleanse is a salt water flush. This is the most important yet disruptive part of the cleanse. You will need to stay close to a bathroom during this entire process.

Step 1: The Flush
Combine 1 quart of warm water with 2 teaspoons of organic sea salt (non-iodized). It must be non-iodized and organic! You can do this in the morning or the evening on the first day, but I don’t recommend being far from a bathroom. At night you will drink a laxative tea. You will have several bowel movements starting the morning of the flush. Once you do the flush and you have had your first elimination, you will begin the lemonade part of the fast.

Step 2: The Fast
This is a special lemonade concoction made from lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water. You will consume six to twelve glasses per day. It is very important to follow the diet if you intend to loose weight. Each glass contains about 110 calories in sugar carbohydrates from the lemon and maple syrup. There is no need to take vitamins while on this fast, the maple syrup is loaded with vitamins and minerals along with the RDA of vitamin C from the lemon juice.

Nutrition facts according to Peer trainer: The majority of the minerals making up pure maple syrup are potassium, calcium, magnesium, and manganese. Minerals provide both specific and nonspecific roles in the body. This along with the cleansing effects of pure lemon make this a nutritionally positive cleanse.

The Master Cleanse Lemonade recipe:
According to Calorielab, Burroughs recommends each drink should contain these ingredients.
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice– Only organic fresh lemons should be used. Make sure that the lemons are organic and not bottled.
2 tablespoons of maple syrup– This must be pure maple syrup. Preferably pure and organic grade B maple syrup witch has more nutrient then the grade A. However grade A is OK .
1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper- Burroughs insists that cayenne chili pepper be used, he permits ramping up from a lesser amount if the taste needs getting used to.
Water- Burroughs also recommends a 10-ounce glass of medium hot water.

If your interested in weight loss you should limit your intake to no more then 6 glasses of the lemonade drink. If detox is your plan, then 6- 12 is OK. Traditionally, this is a 2 week diet, but even if you only last for 1 week it’s a start.

It will take several days for your stomach to shrink and hunger to be minimal. I know this from my own experience. I started the diet 2 days ago and I can honestly say it’s working. I’ve lost 4 lbs already. However, it could be due to the saltwater cleanse and the diuretic effect it has, so I will post updates over the next few days as to my own experience and results.

If anyone reading this had success with the Master Cleanse / Lemon diet, I’d love to hear about it.

Pregnant or nursing women should not follow the diet plan. People with health problems or on any medication should consult their physicians before beginning any diet.
