Is Zinc Safe During Pregnancy?

When you have a cold, your natural instinct may be to take zinc to treat it. Although the effectiveness of loading up on zinc to treat a cold is controversial, it is a remedy that many turn to. Is this the safest thing you can do during pregnancy, though? Here’s what all women should know about using this supplement while they are pregnant.

Is Zinc Safe During Pregnancy?

Moderate amounts of zinc are considered safe – and are even recommended – for women to consume during pregnancy. In fact, zinc deficiencies have been linked to miscarriage, toxemia, and other pregnancy complications, according to BabyCenter. Some research suggests that zinc supplementation may improve low birth weight. One study found that while low birth weight did not decrease, there were fewer health risks among babies with low birth weights, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Although zinc deficiencies in the U.S. are rare, it’s best to avoid cutting zinc out of your diet completely.

What are the Concerns About Using Zinc During Pregnancy?

The biggest concern about using zinc during pregnancy applies to consuming a significant amount – such as the amount that you would probably consume if you were trying to ward off a cold. Pregnant women are not recommended to use significant amounts of zinc because the effects that it may have on their pregnancy and unborn babies are not yet known.

How Much Zinc is Safe to Consume During Pregnancy?

Moderate amounts of zinc during pregnancy are recommended. The amount of zinc that is found in food and multivitamin supplements is considered safe for pregnant women, according to the Mayo Clinic. The daily recommended amount of zinc for pregnant women depends on age. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, it is safe to consume 13 mg of zinc a day and if you are 19 or older, it is safe to consume 11 mg of zinc a day, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Is Zinc Safe to Consume While Breastfeeding?

Although zinc is considered safe to use while breastfeeding, there is limited research on the effects of consuming significant amounts of zinc during this time. According to the Mayo Clinic, breastfeeding mothers between the ages of 14 and 18 can safely consume up to 14 mg of zinc a day, while women 19 and over can safely consume up to 12 mg of zinc a day.

Zinc is safe to consume during pregnancy and should even play a role in your diet. It’s best to avoid consuming significant amounts of zinc once you have conceived, however. If you are thinking about taking zinc to treat a cold or want recommendations on other home remedies that are safe for you to use while you are pregnant or breastfeeding, be sure to talk to a licensed healthcare professional.
