How to Crochet a Pillowcase

There are few things as nice as a super soft pillow that you can claim as your own. An extra soft and cozy pillow is something that people will sometimes hold on to for years. When you crochet a super soft pillowcase for a favorite pillow, you have made something that can be truly treasured. I chose to make the pillowcase pictured with this article as a gift for my son this year.

You will not need many items to get started on this crochet craft project. The first thing you will want to do is decide on which pillow you will making this pillowcase for. You can use any size pillow for this project but you will want to stick with a square or rectangle shaped pillow. You will also want to consider using a pillow that has already been worn in a bit so that your pillowcase will be a good fit for a long time.

You will also want to choose a very thick and extremely soft yarn for making your pillow case. When you crochet with very thick yarn you will need to make far few stitches than if you were using a thin yarn. You will want to remember this when purchasing your yarn for this craft project. I purchased the yarn that I used for the pillowcase featured in the picture with this article by shopping here. Listed below are the few things that you will need to crochet your very own pillowcase.

Items Needed To Crochet Pillowcase
1. Thick and soft yarn
2. Scissors
3. A pillow
4. Crochet Needle

Crochet Instructions For Pillowcase
The first thing you will need to do is tie off a loop on the end of your yarn. You will want to start with a rather large loop that will allow you to move the thick yarn as easily as possible. You will also want to make sure that you are using a crochet needle that is the appropriate size to use for looping your yarn.

You will want to start your crochet by stitching a single stitch line with large loops that is also equal in length to the width of your pillow. Be sure to give your first row of crochet a few extra stitches so that you will have no trouble slipping your pillow in to the pillowcase when it is finished.

Double check that your first row of crochet is plenty long enough to accommodate your pillow and then you can begin to double stitch crochet. You will double stitch your crochet loops until you have made enough rows to make the length double the length of your pillow. Remember to keep your crochet stitches large enough to let the yarn slip easily through each loop.

Finishing Touches
Lay your pillowcase out flat and set your pillow on top of it at one end. Fold the pillowcase over to make sure you have the length exactly as you need it. If you find that you have enough stitching finished to cover your pillow completely, you can begin to crochet the sides to close them. You might also want to consider using a different color of yarn for the side stitching.

Start at the open ends of each side of your pillowcase. Crochet a double connecting stitch down the full length of the side and then be sure to knot off the end of the yarn on the inside of the pillowcase. Do exactly the same thing for the opposite side of your pillowcase and again be sure to knot on the inside. You will need to flip the pillowcase inside out in order to knot off your last end of the yarn.

Stuff your pillow in to the pillowcase and enjoy the wonderful treasure you have just created. I hope you enjoy this crochet craft project and if you are looking for more craft and hobby ideas, be sure to click here.
