No Sew Holiday Fleece Tied Blanket ~ Easy Holiday Craft

Here are complete instructions for this easy no-sew holiday craft project.

Whether you’ve been wanting one of these comfy-soft no-sew blankets for yourself, or you are wanting to make a handmade holiday gift for someone special, you’ll enjoy making the No-Sew Fleece Tied Holiday Blanket.

Here’s what you’ll need for to make the no-sew ties fleece blanket...

Scissors –
Nice sharp sewing or craft scissors work best. If you’re cutting fleece with dull scissors, you’re going to get frustrated very quickly!

Ruler –
Even the little 6-inch one kids use is fine. You’re just going to be using it to mark the “cut-to” line on the fleece.

Making Tape –
Narrow, light-adhesive tape works best. Grab the cheapie stuff from the dollar store because you’re going to be peeling it back off the fleece when you’ve finished tying the no-sew blanket, so you don’t want it to stick too good.

Fabric-
You’ll need two pieces of fleece the same size to make each no-sew blanket. I usually get a fun print for the top piece of fleece and a co-ordinating solid fleece for the back piece. You can also use two solids, two prints, or even two pieces of the exact same fabric. It’s all up to you, so be creative!

Before you start, decide what size no-sew blanket you want to make, so you’ll know how much fleece to buy. Fleece usually comes in 60-inch wide rolls. Here are some common sizes for the no-sew fleece blankets:

Baby carseat throw – each piece of fleece starts as a 18-inch by 30-inch rectangle.
Cuddle-on-the-couch personal throw – each piece of fleece starts as a 54-inch by 60-inch rectangle.
Bed-size (fits up to queen-size) – each piece of flece starts as a 60-inch by 90-inch rectangle.

Check your local discount chain stores for holiday fleece. They start rolling it out as early as August at places like Wal-mart and Alco. If you’re lucky enough to live near a Jo-Ann’s Crafts or a Hobby Lobby, you’ll find an even bigger selection of fleece, although the prices there will be a bit higher.

Start by laying out your two fabric pieces on a table or clean floor. The piece on the bottom should have the “good” side facing down, while the piece on top should have the “good” side facing up. (The two “wrong” sides will be against each other in the middle.)

Stick a piece of masking tape 4-5 inches in from each edge of the blanket. This will be your “cut-to” line. For the baby no-sew blanket, go four inches from the edge; for the larger sizes of no-sew blankets go in 5 inches. Each corner will end up with a square where the tape crosses. Cut that square out (through BOTH layers of fleece) and discard it. (Or save up the squares and use them for a different craft project.)

Now, with the no-sew blanket still laying out flat, start cutting the fringe around the edges. Cuts should be 1 inch wide and cut up to the tape line. You don’t have to be exact! No stress, just be as consistent as you can. Cut all the way around all four sides of your no-sew blanket this way.

Next, starting at one corner of the no-sew blanket, gently lift the first set of fringe (you should be holding one of each color.) Tie it like the first step of tying a shoe: cross like an X, then tuck under. Do this twice, once right over left, and tuck under, and then left over right, and then tuck under. Then move to the next set, and repeat , going around all four edges. Do your right and left crosses in the same order each time!

Once you have all the tying completed on your no-sew blanket, peel the tape guide-linesoff of the fleece. You’re finished! You have a beautiful No-Sew Tied Fleece Blanket to keep for yourself or give as a holiday gift for someone special. Wasn’t that easy?
