How to Cope with Depression After the Loss of a Loved One

I write these articles not because I studied on them, but because I have been there. I am still in a trance waiting for something to happen. No matter what your circumstances are, there is always that moment when you feel emptiness in your heart whenever you think about the reality of things after you loved one has died.

Depression can be caused by many things and one of them is the heartache of a loved one dying. Don’t try to fight it alone, this may be a battle that is better fought with the help of someone else. I know what it is like to lose someone and feel as though you are not able to express the way you feel. There are steps that you can take to try to overcome depression.

I don’t know your circumstances but I know mine and I know the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night crying in a dark corner or the feeling of walking through a store and seeing something that reminds you of them, you began to cry uncontrollably with everyone staring at you. These are feelings of grief but can also be feelings of depression. Only a certified doctor can diagnose you with depression and so it is best to seek help before you slip further into depression.

Most people will suffer from some sort of depression after their loved one has died but you should also know when the depression is not seizing and when you should seek professional help.

Signs of depression are loss of appetite, not able to concentrate, mood swings, uncontrollable urge to cry for no reason, feelings of guilt, feelings of increased sadness or worthlessness, tired, irritable, nervous, and the list goes on. There are many symptoms of depression and the cause is unknown. It is believed to be brought on by a chemical imbalance in the brain but can also be brought on by sudden changes in your life such as a death.

Depression can lead to sudden thinking about death or wanting to harm yourself. Depression has been thought to be controlled with prescription medication and counseling. If things get worse and you feel like you are unable to live any longer, seek immediate professional help.

Seek a group of friends or family members that will listen to you. Sometimes all you may need is to talk to someone who will listen to you.

If you feel that you are not suffering from depression, take a look around you and make sure that your loved ones are not showing any symptoms. There are many people who don’t know how to talk to other people and so they may not come out and say that they are depressed.

Children will usually show signs before adults will but they may not understand what is going on around them and so they will need your guidance.

If you feel like you need to talk to someone or if you are feeling like committing suicide, call the toll free hotline at 1-800-suicide and speak to someone who is there to help. This number is good 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
