Dieting Tips: Low Fat Snack Ideas

When losing weight, it is very important that you make sure to eat three small meals and two snacks daily. For me, the meal part is easy. It is preparing healthy, FILLING snacks that is tricky. I find that I need to have a carb and a protein together to keep me full long enough to be able to hold me over to the next meal. This is how I do my meals as well, I try and limit the processed stuff and eat a lot of wholesome foods. It is hard, but I know that it is the only way to curb cravings for the bad junk. The following are some snack ideas that I have used during my journey. Enjoy!

I like my snacks to be simple. One of the most simple and basic snacks you could have, would be an apple and low fat string cheese. The carbs and sweetness of the apple and the little bit of protein in the string cheese, makes for a great snack. Apple slices and low fat cheese slices are also an option.

Wasa Crisps. I like to use these a few different ways. I enjoy the light rye crisp ones. One way I eat them is to spread a small dab of fat free cream cheese on one crisp, place two slices of fat free healthy choice ham on top and slap another rye crisp on top of that. Another way, is to spread some fat free cottage cheese on top of a rye crisp, and spread a dab of reduced-fat peanut butter on top of that.

Egg whites and Turkey bacon. Sounds like a weird snack, but two egg whites with two slices of turkey bacon makes a great and filling snack for me. If I want a carb with it I may eat a slice of whole wheat toast, or cook half a cup of frozen Potato’s O’Brian. Dab a little hot sauce on it and you are good to go.

Protein oatmeal. Take some plain Quaker oats and cook them with some milk, and splenda . Mix in some chocolate protein powder , and a spoonful of reduced fat peanut butter.

Turkey roll-ups. Spread fat free cream cheese on a whole wheat tortilla. Place a few slices of reduced fat turkey such as healthy choice brand on top of the cream cheese. Place a spinach or lettuce leaf on top of that. Slowly and tightly roll up the tortilla into a tight roll-up. Slice it into pieces and serve.

Low fat nachos. Brown some low fat ground turkey in a pan. Season with taco seasoning if desired. Drain the grease. Arrange seven baked or low fat tortilla chips on a plate. Place the ground turkey on top. Pour low fat salsa and either pour some reduced fat nacho cheese over the top, or sprinkle with shredded low fat Mexican blend cheese and place in the oven until cheese is melted. Top with fat free sour cream.

Ricotta snack dessert. Spoon half a cup of fat free or reduced fat ricotta cheese into a bowl. Pour 1tsp of vanilla extract into it. Next sprinkle a bit of splenda inside, as well as 1tsp of unsweetened cocoa. Then mix well. Sprinkle the top with a few mini chocolate chips. The taste resembles a tiramisu a bit. To change it up you can add almond extract instead of the vanilla extract.

These are just a few of my favorites. Enjoy!
