Tie Dye Party Ideas – 5 Easy Steps

Tie Dye Party

Kids love to give their friends a goody-bag from their birthday parties. This year, instead of creating a party favor of candy and other trinkets, provide each kid with a plainly colored or white t-shirt, and some rubber bands, then watch them as they create their own goody Tie Dye T-shirt take away.

And it’s not just for kids – Having a family re-union, or how about a BBQ picnic, poolside? Guests can make their tie dye T-shirts; bandannas, shorts, towels, whatever, and enjoy them later in the evening after dark, when the sun goes down.

Tie Dye Party Invitations

Specify ahead of time to guests your intentions of having a tie-dye birthday or whatever, so they don’t wear their best clothes.

For a more inexpensive and fun alternative, ask them to bring an item of clothing they would like to dye.

Tie-dye Supplies

1. For about $3.00 a piece, and sometimes even cheaper, go to the local dollar store and buy an inexpensive plain white or plain colored T-shirt for each guest (light colors work better). Make sure the T-shirt is at least 60% cotton. Pre-wash them to remove any sizing.

2. You also will want to buy a few different colors of RIT dye. Each color costs about $3.00. Buy both light and dark colors.

Tie-dying preparation

3. The day of the party, prepare an area with newspapers or plastic bags so that any smattering of die doesn’t ruin the table or the floor. If weather permits, definitely take this party project outside. Mix up a few buckets of different RIT dyes with hot water per the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to use containers that you don’t mind throwing out if they get stained.

Be creative with colors when tie-dying

4. Get everyone all tied up in knots by having them wrap rubber bands around different bunches of the cloth. Provide rubber gloves so that their hands don’t become dyed, and then have the guests carefully dip the cloth into the different buckets of color, rotating the shirt and the dipping areas, so that they apply the color where they want. It is best to have them start with the lighter colors and then do the darker colors last.

Tie-Dye Party Favors – Make great take-aways

5. Let the shirts dry. Remove the rubber bands to see the glorious artwork. If the shirts are still wet when the guests are ready to go, put them in resealable plastic bag and instruct them to let them dry at home.

Note: The first few washings may cause the colors to bleed, so avoid washing in warm water or with whites.
