Summer Birthday Party Themes for Kids

Host a Deserted Island, Hawaiian Luau or Trains and Transportation theme party for your child’s summer birthday party. You can host a free birthday party and make healthy snacks for kids.

Summer Birthday Party Themes for Kids

Deserted Island

Send invitations in empty water bottles filled with clean sand, shells and green raffia seaweed. Roll up the invitation and put it in the bottle. When kids arrive give each of them a small pail with a shovel, and a name tag. They can save their place at the birthday party table with their pail.

Bury party favors including bottles of bubbles, hula hoops, jump ropes and plastic horseshoes in the sand. Make sure there are enough favors for all guests, and help younger birthday party guests find the favors in the sand.

Decorate a cooler to look like a treasure chest by wrapping it in plain, brown paper. Draw on leather straps and a lock with a black marker. Fill with bottles of water, ice, apples, oranges, and bags of gold chocolate coins.

Hawaiian Luau

Host a Hawaiian Luau birthday party for kids. This theme can be used for kids of all ages. Hawaiian Luau party supplies are easy to find at local discount stores or at Walmart. Send an invitation with a paper lei made from tissue paper and yarn. Ask guests to wear grass skirts, or provide them for guests.

Serve foods in cups that look like coconuts and pineapples. Hollow out real pineapples and watermelons to use as serving dishes for fresh fruit. Make cold and frothy drinks with juice and crushed ice.

Set up blankets or towels in a circle on the ground rather than using a traditional table. Place a kid pool in the middle with water and add floating flowers and decorations. Toss in some plastic party favors including plastic fish, water squirters and pool diving sticks.

Decorate with unlit Tiki torches. Leave out the cans of oil fuel and make fake flames with yellow, red and orange tissue paper. Use the tissue paper to make flowers, as decorations or for craft time. Have a dancing contest and a limbo contest.

Trains and Transportation

Toddlers and preschoolers who enjoy trains, trucks, fire engines, planes and boats will love this birthday party theme.

Use black electrical tape to create two long parallel lines on the sidewalk. Add smaller short lines to complete the train rails. Continue the track inside the house and into the yard. Add signs to direct guests to the food, the drinks, the bathroom and the game area.

Cut rectangular shapes out of construction paper, add numbers and round and square face. Tape to the wall and to the chairs. Use bright blue and white for balloons and tabletop decorations. Add blow-up boats, planes and any other transportation theme decorations.

Party favors for the Trains and Transportation birthday party could include train conductor caps, car-shaped bath toys or small floating boats.

At the party kids can create their own trains using empty tissue boxes, small cereal boxes, or any other empty square box. Provide red, green, brown and blue paint and have the kids paint the boxes early in the party. They will be dry enough for kids to decorate the trains near the end of the party. Or, pre-paint the boxes in solid colors and give the kids stickers to decorate the train cars. Use pipe cleaners and wooden wheels or butter cookies with a hole in the middle to make the wheels.

Or focus on trains with a Thomas & Friends Birthday Party Theme for Preschoolers.

The Trains and Transportation theme will appeal to mostly toddlers and preschoolers, while the Hawaiian Luau and Deserted Island summer birthday party themes can be customized for school children, tweens and teens.
