ABBA: Tracks from “Mamma Mia!”

ABBA, the world-popular Swedish band, in the 1970s produced many hits that to this day remain well-known and highly recognizable to millions. While ABBA songs have always received widespread airplay, we have been recently hearing more about ABBA and their classic music since the debut of “Mamma Mia!” on Broadway and the release of the 2008 film based on the Broadway production.

My awareness of ABBA was limited to about four of the band’s songs up until seeing the film “Mamma Mia!” in the movie theaters over the summer of 2008. Amazed by the many hits and wide array of music ABBA produced over the relatively short seven or eight years during which the group peaked on the charts, I decided to do a little digging and find out when the songs were released and how some performed on the U.S. charts.

Chiquitita

This song hit the charts in 1979 and peaked in 1980, topping out at #29 on the charts.

Dancing Queen

One of the most popular ABBA songs, and for good reason: this ABBA song reached the #1 spot in 1977 and spent fifteen weeks in the Top 40.

Does Your Mother Know

This 1979 ABBA hit spent ten weeks in the Top 40, reaching the #19 spot.

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)

Released as a single in 1979.

Honey, Honey

One of the earlier ABBA hits, Honey, Honey spent four weeks in the Top 40 Billboard charts in late 1974; the song reached #27.

I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do

In 1976, this song spent eight weeks in the Top 40 and peaked at #15.

I Have a Dream

Though the song was not initially released in the United States, I Have a Dream was one of ABBA’s 1979 titles. In 1981, Cristy Lane’s rendition reached #17 on the U.S. Country Singles charts.

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Proceeding Dancing Queen in the U.S. charts, Knowing Me, Knowing You was a Top 40 hit for ten weeks in 1977, topping out at #14.

Lay All Your Love on Me

A popular dance song released in 1980 on the album Super Trouper.

Mamma Mia

The song a lot of you probably wanted to find out a bit more about as it is, after all, the title of the Broadway hit and popular film. Mamma Mia spent four weeks in the Top 40 during the summer of 1976, topping out at #32.

Money, Money, Money

Released in 1976 on the ABBA album Arrival.

Our Last Summer

Released in 1980 on the album Super Trouper.

Slipping Through My Fingers

A song on ABBA’s last album produced during their time together as a band, Slipping Through My Fingers was released late in 1981.

SOS

In 1975, SOS spent eight weeks in the Top 40 and reached #15. The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits notes this is the only chart hit song where both the song title and the band’s name are palindromes (where the word can be read both forward and backward).

Super Trouper

Also the name of the 1980 album on which this song was released.

Take a Chance on Me

In 1978, Take a Chance on Me broke into the Top 5 and spent fourteen weeks in the Top 40, performing as well as #3 at one point in the U.S.

The Name of the Game

We all were learning the “Name of the Game” when this song spent nine weeks in the Top 40 U.S. charts in 1978 and reached #12.

The Winner Takes it All

Peaking on the charts in 1981, The Winner Takes it All was a Top 10 performer and spent sixteen weeks in the Top 40. The song also was a #1 “Adult Contemporary Hit” for 2 weeks.

Under Attack

Though it did not reach the Top 40 on the U.S. charts, this was among the last songs released by ABBA before they disbanded in 1982.

Voulez-Vous

Released in 1979 on the album of the same name.

When All is Said and Done

The last Top 40 hit in the U.S. for ABBA, When All is Said and Done was the chart-performing swan song for the group in 1982; When All is Said and Done reached #27 and spent eight weeks on the Top 40 charts.
