Product Review of Sally Hansen Spa Wax Hair Removal Kit

I purchased the Sally Hansen Lavender Spa Wax Hair Removal Kit to wax my bikini area. I had never used wax of any kind before; nor have I ever had anything like this done at a salon or day spa. I had never used a home wax kit before because I was afraid it would be too messy and painful. I didn’t go to a salon for fear of the prices.

I had always shaved my bikini line with a twin blade, in the shower. My skin is very sensitive, and shaving always made it itch and chafe very badly. Finally, I made up my mind. I had to find a better solution. I wasn’t going to shave in that area anymore.

I briefly considered buying an epilator, but they cost upwards of $50 and I wasn’t sure they’d be any easier on my tender skin than the twin-blade. Wax seemed to be the only reasonable solution, but which kit should I try? A lot of the kits impressed me as being difficult to use just from reading the instructions on the boxes. I settled on the Sally Hansen Kit because it seemed simpler. The box also states that it’s good for sensitive skin. For me, that was a big selling point.

At about $10, this is one of the more reasonably priced home wax kits. When you consider that there’s six ounces of wax and twenty cloth strips included, it’s downright cheap!

I made a couple of mistakes the first time I used this wax kit. Number 1, I wore clothes that I really didn’t want to get wax on. Once you heat the wax in the microwave, it’s a little drippy. It tends to end up in places you didn’t intend for it to go. Number 2, I failed to spread newspaper on the floor. The otherwise easy to use wax dripped not only onto my clothing but onto the linoleum as well. This was not a total disaster as the wax washed right out of my clothes. I got it off the floor with a little olive oil on a paper towel.

I spread the warm, gooey wax on with one of the wooden spatulas in the kit and quickly smoothed a cloth strip down over it. Then I held the skin taught as per the instructions and ripped. Off came the hair and most of the purple wax. It didn’t even hurt. The only time it stung a little was when I forgot to hold the skin taught. The excess wax drips came off easily when rubbed with the finishing oil. I would have done this a long time ago if I had known how quick and painless it would be.

Sally Hansen recommends that you use this kit for your body, legs, arms and bikini area. After seeing what a great job it did on my bikini area, I tried it on my upper lip. It didn’t work because I didn’t let the hair grow long enough for the wax to be able to “grab” it (this requires at least 1/4 inch of growth). However, the wax was easy enough to remove with the soothing azulene finishing oil they include in the kit and it didn’t irritate my skin in the least. Now, I’m not advising you to use this in any way not suggested by the manufacturer, I’m just letting you know how gentle it is. My facial skin is ultra-sensitive. I can’t even wear make-up.

It took about a month for the hair to regrow, and I didn’t experience the least bit of itching or chafing during that time. Since I only wax my bikini area, I estimate that the Lavender Spa Wax Kit will last me approximately six months. Not bad for ten bucks.
