I just recently took on the job of teaching Children’s Church. I have taught it a few times and I am always looking for new ideas for my class. I have a Prayer Lesson that is really cool. So, I thought I would share it with other teachers. My class ranges from ages 3 – 10 years old. So, I have to find something to hold the little one’s attention and the big ones.
In this lesson we talked about Prayer. What is prayer and how do you pray? I used the Adventures Bible for Young Readers. In the back of this Bible you can look for Prayer and it will give you many scriptures that you can read to the kids about prayer. In this Bible you will find questions that you can ask the kids about prayer. We talked about praying for moms and dads, praying for test, animals, and more. Go through the Bible and read different scriptures about prayer and find questions that you can ask your class. If you have a large age group like I do, keep in mind that you will need to ask things that the little ones will understand too.
Once we finished reading and discussing prayer we did a craft. We made Prayer Boxes. I cut little squares of paper for the kids to write things on to pray about and they placed it in their Prayer Box. I told the kids to take the Prayer Box home, place it beside their bed and pull out something to pray about every night when they go to bed. You may have to help the little ones write their prayers. Here is how we made the prayer boxes.
I went ahead and cut out the boxes and handles ahead of time. We only have about an hour or so, so it’s best to cut the boxes and handles and then put them together in Children’s Church. To make the boxes, I used construction paper, and I cut two slits in each end of the paper. Cut the slit about an inch from each corner and cut it about an inch and a half long. This part is a little hard to explain. Please see my image to get an idea on how to cut the paper. I also used construction paper to cut the handles out. I cut the handles about inch and a half wide. I went ahead and wrote on each handle “My Prayer Box”. Go ahead and cut squares for the kids to write their prayers on.
In class I let the kids draw on their prayer boxes and color their drawings. Once they were finished, we put the boxes together. Then we stapled the handles onto the boxes. To put the boxes together, fold the sides up and then tape the cut ends to the folded part. And that is your Prayer Box!
