P90X Diet Guide for Phase 2

Phase 2 of the P90X workout program requires you to eat just the right balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fat so that you can make it through the ‘Energy Booster’ workouts. The foods you eat during Phase 2 of the P90X program are supposed to give you the energy you need to get through the vigorous cardio and weight training routines. Your focus during this phase is less on losing fat, and more on increasing endurance and stamina.

This means your P90X nutrition program needs to consist of high quality protein, low-glycemic carbohydrates, and healthy fats in just the right ratios. Here are some of the best foods to eat during Phase 2 of the P90X program:

1. Whole wheat bread. Since more carbohydrates are permitted during Phase 2 of the P90X program, you can enjoy whole wheat bread sandwiches or wraps for at least two meals of the day. You can eat three servings of complex carbohydrates during Phase 2 of the P90X program, and two slices of whole wheat bread qualifies as a single serving.

2. Power bars or protein shakes. Most power bars and protein shakes contain the optimum mix of carbohydrates, fats and protein for Phase 2 of the P90X program. The best time to consume these is right after your workout, because the protein and fats will aid with recovery.

3. Lean meat. Skinless chicken breast, lean turkey meat and lean ground beef are your best sources of protein during Phase 2 of the P90X diet. You can combine these with complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat pasta or brown rice for a complete meal.

4. Low-fat cheese. You can eat certain types of dairy products with the P90X nutrition program, and your best bets are mozzarella or parmesan cheese. Stick with organic, minimally processed cheeses to keep your diet as ‘clean’ as possible.

5. Vegetable juice. You’re allowed to eat three servings of low-carb vegetables each day during Phase 2 of the P90X program, but if you don’t have time to eat a freshly-prepared salad or steam up some veggies, you can drink some fresh vegetable juice instead. You’ll need this for your daily dose of essential vitamins and minerals.

6. Low-glycemic fruits. You’re permitted to eat one piece of low-sugar fruit each day during Phase 2 of the P90X program, and you best options are an apple, banana or pear because these fruits contain fiber and will give you plenty of energy for several hours after consumption. Avoid citrus fruits and sugary fruits like mangos or strawberries, because these can increase your blood sugar levels and make you hungrier.

Phase 2 of the P90X program is designed to provide you with enough energy to get through the workouts and aid with the recovery process. You can stick with Phase 2 of the P90X diet for as long as it’s working for you; the next phase is designed only for people who want to increase their endurance and maximize muscle gain with their workouts, so you can stick with this eating program indefinitely if you want to maintain your results.
