Movie Review: Dirty Jobs Season 1 DVD

This is where it all began, Mike Rowe searches the country looking for disgusting jobs along with the people who perform them so that society can exist and run like a well oiled machine for the rest of us.

Mike Rowe started something when he sent the Discovery Channel a piece he did for San Francisco Evening Magazine on CBS called Somebody’s Gotta Do it. Mike did a piece on Cow Artificial Insemination and sent the resulting tape to the Discovery Channel after the piece earned him a host of replies from fans and others.

I’m sure complaints were also included in the numerous letters but he went to work for Discovery to show the world that civilized society does have its Dirty Jobs. People around the world can now see Mike has really taken his work seriously as he has apprenticed for more than 200 jobs.

Dirty Jobs Season 1 includes 5 discs with 10 main jobs he sought out all over the country from Bat Cave Scavenger to Hot Tar Roofer. The jobs are varied and highly educational in how they not only show the people but what goes on behind the scenes of these jobs.

I think that is why I thoroughly enjoy this show and others like it such as MythBusters, it is not only entertaining but highly educational. This is the kind of show you not only want to show to kids, probably middle school age and up, but really should to give them an appreciation for our society.

Those people that work at jobs like garbage collection, recycling, farming, roofing and more show the jobs that make up our work force and their necessity to our way of life. Kids can really get an appreciation for the diversity of our societies jobs and the need for many that we might think are unsavory or just plain gross.

I did find a couple of schools including a high school in Canada that uses some of Mike Rowe’s Dirty Jobs in the classroom as part of their curriculum. Mike Rowe also gave a keynote address at an FFA, Future Farmers of America, national convention in 2009 talking about people’s perception of agriculture among other things.

Dirty Jobs really has enlightened people about our society and jobs that are not only required but done by others who enjoy their work even if it is filthy and disgusting. More to the point beyond the dirt and gross stuff is the need for these jobs and the hard working people behind them.

Dirty Jobs shows the everyday people who are willing to roll their sleeves up, and even their pant legs, and do what needs to be done. Dirty Jobs Season 1 starts off the series that shows “the grimiest, grossest jobs around.” and Mike Rowe does have fun showing us.

Technically speaking Dirty Jobs looks as good in season 1 as it does in season 4 with well done video and audio but being a reality show always on location you do get technical blunders. Throughout Season 1 I found no problems technically that would detract from the shows entertainment and the show really is great looking and sounding.

“Dirty Jobs profiles the unsung American laborers who make their living in the most unthinkable-yet vital-ways.” from about Dirty Jobs which is very true. I think this is a main reason I like Dirty Jobs, the series and Mike Rowe really make a great effort to show the Dirty Jobs they highlight with great respect for the job and the people working them.

Mike Rowe tries hard to show these jobs as ones people can be proud to be doing and really does show the jobs as ones that are necessary to our society. Another great thing about Mike personally is the fact that he created his own job, numerous times, which really is cool.

Mike Rowe has gone out of his way to show these dirty jobs and single handedly created the show from its humble beginnings when Mike worked for a news show. Dirty Jobs has become a classic reality TV show and Mike Rowe is quickly becoming a household word in the United States (think Ford).

Dirty Jobs Season 1 DVD Set is available at Discovery Channel and Amazon for $35 to $50 depending on the store and shipping.
