Happy May 28th!

May 28th is a special holiday. In fact, every day’s a holiday for someone and for some reason.

Although we may not know the origins of many of these holidays, avid celebrants will participate eagerly in marking May 28th as a most special day for so many different reasons.

Here are several of the most popular May 28th holidays (arranged alphabetically):

Amnesty Day

May 28th is Amnesty Day, proclaimed by Amnesty International, to celebrate the organization’s 1961 founding. As a holiday, Amnesty Day is aimed at raising public awareness of human rights issues worldwide. Human injustices, such as torture and unfair incarcerations, are the focus of this organization and this holiday.

Feast of Zerowork

Based on several ancient civilizations’ traditions of a season of jubilee (when slaves were freed, debts forgiven, and labor recessed), the Feast of Zerowork is held on May 28th.

Couch potatoes are in their prime on May 28th, as others join their idleness. After all, it’s the Feast of Zerowork.

Hamburger Day

“Do you want fries with that?”

The end of May signals the start of outdoor grilling season, and hamburgers are the hallmark of al fresco dining. On May 28th, Hamburger Day, folks everywhere fire up their barbecues to cook up delicious burgers with unlimited toppings.

Hamburger Day actually has quite a somber origin. On May 28, 1969, after two weeks of intense combat, American troops in Vietnam pulled back from Ap Bia Mountain (Hill 937), which later became known as “Hamburger Hill” for all the casualties suffered there.

James Bond Day

“Bond, James Bond.”

Ian Lancaster Fleming, British author and creator of the legendary fictional British secret agent (James Bond, 007), was born on May 28, 1908.

To mark Ian Fleming’s birthday, spy novel and movie fans read their favorite stories of intrigue and view their best-loved James Bond movies. From Doctor No to Diamonds Are Forever, and from Goldfinger to Golden Eye, James Bond has captivated readers and movie audiences with his investigative prowess, intriguing spy devices and outrageous wordplays.

Who’s your favorite James Bond? Is it Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton?
