How to Make Vintage Button Plate Chargers

These easy Vintage button plate chargers are a great project for anyone who loves all things vintage to make. You can create a whimsical, vintage, and fun table setting for the entire family to enjoy.

You can make these Vintage button plate chargers in less than an hour. You should expect to pay about $4 per charger.

To Make These Vintage button Plate Charger You Will need:

Foam Core board

Vintage button

Spray Paint (optional)

Twine (brown)

Tapestry Needle

Hot Glue or Tacky Glue (optional)

So the first step is to cut out your Vintage button charger shapes. I like to grab one of my dinner plates or vintage china and trace it. Be sure to add on about three inches to the circle though so you can see the charger sitting under you plate.

Now, you can cut foam core board with scissors or an exacto knife.

Your foam core board will show beneath of your Vintage button, so color is something to keep in mind.

You can’t decoupage foam core board because it will curl up and warp as the decoupage glue dries.

Now, start in the middle.

If you want to use glue: Squeeze out a glob of hot glue on the middle of your charger. Press on Vintage button into the glue. Now, use this as your guide. I like to work out towards the edge in a spiral pattern.

If you want to sew the buttons on: Place your button in place. Thread your metal tapestry needle with the brown twine. Push through the back of the foam core board and sewing through the holes in the button. Make an X while you are sewing them on.

I prefer this thread and sewing the vintage button method because it adds a wonderful real touch that glue just does not have.

You could also work in perfect circles over and over until you reach the edge of the charger.

You could also create lines of color running across the charger.

Now, color is just as important as the design. You can use one color and have Vintage button in the whole charger be red. That would be a great contemporary look.

For a fun whimsical look try using every color vintage button possible.

All retro red or all lemon yellow Vintage buttons on the charger would also be great!

Now, you need to less these Vintage button charger dry overnight before you use them if you glued the buttons on.

If you want to you can spray on a coat of clear acrylic spray paint to the entire vintage button Christmas Plate charger. This will make the foam core board water proof and easy to clean.

Tip: You can buy foam core board in a variety of colors at almost any arts and craft store. If you want though, you can also spray paint it with any color paint you want. Just let this dry before you move on the next step.

Use all the same size Vintage button on this homemade Christmas charger. This will help your plate to set evenly on the table. Nothing is worth than trying to cut you food and having the dinner plate wobble!
