I love the colors of autumn, and the craft aisles of stores are filled with fall craft supplies and decorations including wreaths, ribbons, artificial flowers, faux pumpkins, beautiful fall leaves, and much more. Those who enjoy crafts have endless options when deciding on fall decorations to make. Ready-made oak leaf swags are available, but they can be quite expensive.
After examining the materials used to make an oak leaf swag, I realized it would be very easy to do it myself, and I would save money over buying the ready-made oak leaf swag. I also realized I could add more leaves and acorns to make it look fuller than the store-bought version. I enjoy working on crafts, and I regularly discover high-priced craft items that I could easily make myself.
The following instructions explain how to make a beautiful oak leaf swag. You’ll save a considerable amount of money making an oak leaf swag versus buying one, and more than likely your oak leaf swag will turn out better than similar oak leaf swags sold in stores. Even if you don’t possess artistic abilities, you can make your own oak leaf swag, and more than likely you’ll be very happy with the results you achieve.
Natural Vine Swag
Grapevines are fantastic for creating wreaths and swags, and if you have access to grapevines, take advantage these fantastic free craft materials. My ex in-laws had grapevines, and when fall arrived I had direct access to all of the free grapevines I could use. I made unique wreaths for a number of holidays and special occasions, grapevine angels, and beautiful fall and winter swags.
Begin by cutting off the grapevines you want to use after the leaves have dried up in the fall. Grapevines are very pliable, so combine about four or five vines of about the same length, and randomly intertwine them. If necessary, secure the ends of with a small piece of wire. A bread tie with the covering removed works very well. Alternately you can secure the ends with brown paper twist.
When shopping for artificial oak leaves you’ll find sprigs of various sizes and colors, and quality also varies. You’ll discover that some are even sprinkled with glitter. Purchase several oak leaf springs, and you might want to consider purchasing artificial acorns to add to your swag.
After you have a generous supply of artificial fall leaves to adequately cover your oak leaf swag, begin removing the leaves from the wire stems. Hot glue the leaves, or wire them to the grapevines. If you decide to add acorns, attach them in groupings in a few different locations along the swag.
Hang your finished oak leaf swag above a mirror, on an entry door, above your fireplace, or any location you want to decorate for fall. The oak leaf swag you make will definitely impress your friends and family, and chances are they’ll want an oak leaf swag or two when decorating their homes for fall.
