How to Join AARP: Facts and Information

AARP is a non-profit group started in 1958 by Dr. Ethel Andrus. The AARP has over 40 million members in all 50 of the United States and its surrounding countries. AARP was formed from the National Retired Teachers Association in order to provide aging Americans with health insurance. Today, AARP provides discount benefits on many services and programs, to members over fifty years old. AARP members are well represented in Washington D.C. on matters like Social Security, Medicare, and issues pertaining to the elderly and retired population. AARP provides information on health care insurance, vision and dental insurance, and Medicare supplements and prescription services.

The motto of the AARP is, “To serve, not be served.”

Membership dues are currently at $16 dollars per year with other discounts available for multiple year memberships. By joining AARP, members receive discounts on everything from restaurants and hotels, to automobile insurance, and prescription medicine. A membership kit is mailed upon joining and features a card, and information on taking advantage of all the membership benefits. Membership includes access to health, auto, and homeowners insurance. Auto insurance is provided by The Hartford and features a discount for AARP members.

AARP Life Insurance is currently provided by New York Life Insurance Company and features coverage from $2,500 to $100,000. The phone number is 1-800-865-7927. No medical exam is necessary.
Discounts are also available on travel, telephone service, and more. Members can enroll by mail or online.

AARP research contains information and articles relevant to health, family, aging, consumer topics, and technology.

Volunteering in AARP actiities is encouraged in keeping balanced with issues on nutrition, driver safety, and keeping active in the community. Create The Good is a volunteer organization sponsored by AARP in keeping members active in their neighborhoods.

Divided We Fail is an engaging website by AARP, designed to keep seniors active in being vocal and informed, on elderly issues regarding government legislation. The website invites members activity in contacting Congress and the Senate, on laws to protect the elderly and to ensure financial security. AARP is a strong force in Washington, D.C. influencing legislation affecting the lives of millions of older adults.

AARP Foundation is a philanthropic arm of the AARP. The Foundation provides resources and information, relevant in aiding the older population in many issues including housing, insurance and Social Security.
