Homemade Bath Salts: Picking the Salt that is Right for You

When deciding to make your own bath salts your imagination is the limit. Bath salts can be made with a variety of different types of ingredients. Your first stop when deciding to make bath salts is to decide on the type of salt you want to use as the base of your recipes. There are different types of grains for you to consider when choosing the correct salts for your needs.

All Natural Sea Salt: This type of sea salt is a solar evaporated sea salt with no additives and is unrefined. You can usually find this slat in course or fine grain.

Dead Sea Salt: Dead Sea Salt is imported straight from the Southern Dead Sea in Israel. Dead Sea Salts are unique in a way that they have a 10 times higher salt concentration than ocean water. What makes them perfect as bath salts is that they also are unique in the way that they have a composition of magnesium, calcium chlorides, magnesium and a high concentration of bromides. The chemical compositions of Dead Sea Salt have been noticed for well over 200 years as people have chosen the Dead Sea as an ideal spot for relief of rheumatic and skin disorders.

Epsom Salt: Epsom Salt is made up of magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate is known for helping ease the tension of sore muscles. Combined with the right types of essential oils Epsom salts can help ease the tensions right out of your body and mind.

Regular salt (solar salt, kosher salt, rock salt, table salt) is made up of sodium chloride. There is no healing benefit from using these types of salts and make for a very cheap product. It is also worthy of note to mention that is harmful to the health of people with high blood pressure and edema to sit in a tub full of salt water.

Depending on the look, texture and over all feel you are trying to achieve with your bath salts this is where you will have to decide which type of texture of salt is right for you and your recipe.

Course Grain: Course salt is the largest pieces per grain. Course salt tends to make a nicer product in looks. But when it comes to adding your bath you must make sure that all the salt has dissolved or the experience can be a little uncomfortable sitting on the salt.

Medium Grain: Tends to be a little harder to find and of the better choice when making bath salts as its quicker to dissolve then course and still tends to leave you with an attractive product.

Fine Grain: If you want fast dissolving bath salts this would be your best choice. As it’s the smallest of the acceptable sizes grains for bath salts.

It is recommended that you do not use extra fine salt (ex: table salt) for bath salts as it does not hold up as well when adding any type of fragrances.

Pricing on bulk salt for your product can be anywhere from 5.00 per 20 lbs to 20.00 dollars per 20 lbs. Salt is relatively cheap and is your bulkiest product when it comes to designing your homemade bath salts.
