Food Product Review: General Mills Boo Berry Cereal

Remember General Mills Boo Berry Cereal as a kid? If it’s October and getting closer to Halloween, time to check grocery stores for spooky seasonally available General Mills cereals including Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry Cereal. These General Mills brand cereals are only available at a certain time of year, around Halloween. This associated content article is my review of General Mills Boo Berry Cereal. Is it the same cereal you remember as a kid?

Review of General Mills Boo Berry Cereal : Packaging

A 9.6 oz (272) box of General Mills Boo Berry Cereal was purchased at Giant for $2 in early October. Packaging is a blue cardboard or paperboard box. Inside is plastic bag filled with cereal. My curbside recycling takes the box in addition to plastic bags and many types of plastics, although I’m not sure which number cereal bags are. Cereal bags are reusable. Cereal boxes can be reused in paperboard crafts. Package recyclability is something I consider to be important when purchasing products.

Review of General Mills Boo Berry Cereal : Contains Gelatin, Allergy Info

General Mills brand Boo Berry Cereal contains gelatin in the marshmallow ingredients so it’s not vegetarian. The box doesn’t specify if the gelatin is Kosher. Boo Berry Cereal ingredients include natural and artificial flavors, preservatives, and artificial colors. This cereal may contain peanut and wheat ingredients.

Review of General Mills Boo Berry Cereal : Taste

Inside the box are purple Pacman game like ghosts shapes and blue and pink heads, purple bats, and white ghost marshmallows. The purple ghosts of the blueberry cereal tasted similar to other corn cereals like Kix, with an artificial fruit taste closer to a mild grape juice flavor than blueberry. The milk turned slightly purple. The marshmallows taste like candy but don’t make up a large amount of the cereal.

This creatively named monster themed blueberry marshmallow cereal is eye candy along with the cute hat wearing ghost character on the box, but doesn’t seem as sweet as one might expect based on other product reviews here on Associated Content, Amazon which may offer the cereal at other times of year, and comments made by talk show host Conan O’Brien.

I prefer whole grain cereals but prefer natural blueberry flavoring like that of Kashi’s Wild Blueberry Clusters blueberry cereal. In my opinion, Lucky Charms is a better tasting marshmallow cereal. This cereal described in this associated content article was an interesting change for this time of year. It would pair well with vanilla flavored almond or soy milk to bring out its sweetness.

General Mills Boo Berry Cereal didn’t taste much like blueberry cereal, it tasted more like grape. Perhaps a future version of this marshmallow cereal will be a natural, blueberry flavored cereal? Out of curiosity I might try other Halloween themed cereals, Count Chocula and Franken Berry for breakfast one morning, to see if they live up to the sweet taste described in reviews of the spooky cereals from years past.
