Five Ideas for Movable Walls

Are you looking for a flexible way to divide your living or work space? A movable wall allows you to have privacy when you want it. But, it also allows you to open up the area on demand. You actually get the best of both worlds. From mobile bookcases to simple screens, here are five great ideas for using movable walls in your home.

• Bookcases and Walls on Wheels

When your big, open space is just too open, consider moving in a bookcase or cabinet on wheels. By adding a strong set of casters to a shelving unit, you open up a world of possibilities in room configurations. When you’re looking for privacy in an open loft, slide the bookcase in between a living room and dining area. Then when it’s time for a big party, push it out of the way and open up the space for maximum occupancy. All the while, your bookcase or cabinet can still hold your books or collectibles on the go.

• Sliding Panels

Separate two adjoining rooms with a set of sliding panels that glide on ceiling mounted tracks. You can make the panels heavy duty looking – like rustic barn doors. Or fashion them in a more contemporary and delicate way – like a shoji screen. Either way, just slide them across the opening to close in or open up your space on demand.

• Panels that Pivot

Although they may be a more expensive option, total wall panels that pivot are certainly a fashionable way to build in a movable wall. They look like a huge door – only they are the size of an entire wall that rotates when you want to move them out of the way.

• Free Standing Panels

Movable, free standing wall panels come in many shapes and sizes. You can purchase long, tall panels that have a footed base and move around easily. Or you can find lightweight room dividers with a slight curve that keeps them upright. Some even allow you to configure the shape in a free-form style to fit any space.

• Room Divider Screens

Last, but not least, use a three or four-panel screen to divide a space. It’s probably the most budget-friendly movable wall you’ll find and you can even make your own from a few pieces of lumber and a set of hinges. Dress it to complement your décor and you’ve got a movable wall with style.
