Films with the Most Oscar Nominations 2008 and Analysis

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their 2008 Oscar nominations this morning. Leading the pack with the most Oscar nominations are No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. Both No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood received eight nominations. Atonement and Michael Clayton were the next most-nominated films with seven nominations each.

Eight 2008 Oscar Nominations for Two Films

These two most-nominated films for Academy Awards for 2008, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood received were nominated for mostly the same exact categories. One notable difference, and one which show an Academy tipping more towards There Will Be Blood to win Best Picture, is the absence of “Best Actor” nomination for any of the main players in No Country For Old Men. There was a nomination for supporting actor, though.

The other difference in the Oscar nominations for No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood is that No Country For Old Men received an Oscar nomination for Achievement in Sound Mixing.

Seven 2008 Oscar Nominations for Two Films for 2007

The next films with the most nominations 2008 are Atonement and Michael Clayton. Both Atonement and Michael Clayton received seven Oscar nominations.

Atonement

While Atonement did receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, the director, Joe Wright was not nominated for an Oscar. Early favorite Keira Knightley was also overlooked for Best Actress. Both of these missing Oscar nominations are good indicators that Atonement will not win Best Picture. It will probably win in the more arts-oriented and design categories.
