DIY Copper Kitchen Counter Tops

Copper Kitchen Counter Tops are the easiest way to create dramatic metallic look on the kitchen counter tops in your home. This is a simple Copper Kitchen Counter Tops project, you don’t need to have any experience with glazing or even painting.

These copper kitchen counter tops are the perfect way to update those cheap and outdated looking laminate kitchen counter tops. I would only do this paint treatment on cheap or outdated kitchen counter tops! This will allow you to update your existing kitchen counter tops with a whole new look.

There are a few differ coats of paint in this Copper Kitchen Counter Tops

Finish project, so you will need a few days to complete the entire home improvement project. You won’t be working all day, but the drying paint will take some time.

To Paint Copper Kitchen Counter Tops

You Will Need:

Primer

Sand Paper

Interior Latex Terra Cotta Paint

Metallic Glaze

Polyurethane (oil base)

Paint trays

Painter’s Tape

Paint brushes

Paint Rollers

The first step you are going to have to do is sand your laminate counter tops with some sand paper. Wipe the excess dust away with a damp clothe.

Now, let this dry. Paint on your primer. I recommend doing this with a foam roller. You will want to tape off any edges with painter’s tape as well.

Now, let the primer dry.

Now, when applying any type of copper glaze to a kitchen counter top is to choose the right base coat of interior latex paint.

This is the most important part of the entire kitchen remodel project. If you choose to ignore the next bit of advise, I can almost grantee you your copper finish on the kitchen counter tops will look tacky, fake, and even streaky.

You need to paint the kitchen counter tops with a base coat of interior latex paint in a color that will complement the copper glaze.

Copper glazes applied over a base coat of white or black gives an unprofessional look that is streaky and unfinished looking.

Now, once your primer is dry you simply roll on the base interior coat of latex paint in the terra cotta color. Allow this paint color to dry. You may want to apply two coats.

Now, roll on the copper glaze with a foam roller. You could also paint it on with a soft bristled paint brush in an X motion. The great thing about a faux copper paint treatment that uses glaze is that glaze can often stay wet a little longer than traditional paint, which extends the time you have to work with it.

Now, once this copper glaze has dried you have to apply about three coats of an oil base polyurethane. If you notice, we have been using latex paint to get the look, but we need the protection of oil to keep our kitchen counters water proof! Allow each coat to dry, and then apply another coat of the oil based polyurethane.
