Create Modern Wall Decor Yourself

Modern wall decor can add sophistication and beauty to a room in a way that a simple poster or cheap painting simply cannot. But abstract artwork is very expensive. You might end up paying more for your modern wall decor than for your furniture. And yet abstract artwork can be easy to make if you choose the right idea, mix in a little imagination, and set your creative spirit free. So here are five modern wall decor projects easy enough for any art lover to create.

Modern Wall Decor: AN ABSTRACT PAINTING

The following abstract artwork is easy to make and offers endless versatility, for a modern wall decor that can be hung in any room. Start by choosing the size of your canvas and three shades of oil paint.

Paint the canvas fully with one shade. Once dry, paint half the canvas (either length-wise, width-wise or diagonally) with another shade. Next, before this layer is dry, take a comb and create streaks in the wet paint to expose the bottom shade with circles, lines or a loved one’s name.

Now paint the second half of the canvas with the last shade, and this time use a knife or a thin spatula to create thicker streaks on this side of your abstract artwork. For an even more complex modern wall decor, divide the canvas into four and use five shades. Finally, frame your modern wall decor and enjoy the elegance it adds to your home.

Modern Wall Decor: AN ABSTRACT WOOD PAINTING

This abstract artwork is earthy in tones. Instead of canvas take a slab of plywood. The more texture to the wood, the better. Cut the plywood to the size you wish this modern wall decor to be.

Condition the plywood with pre-stain wood conditioner. Once dry, take a pencil and draw abstract waves, to form a total of four distinct areas. Stain each wave in a different shade and even one on top of another, for added depth in your abstract artwork. Just be sure the bottom stain is dry first. The more you stain each wave, the darker it will be, which will make your modern wall decor more elegant.

Create a picture frame from 2×4 inch (or wider) wood planks wrapped in rough fabric. This modern wall decor is perfect for a kitchen or dining room.

Modern Wall Decor: CLOTH ABSTRACT ARTWORK

At your local fabric store, choose a fabric that looks beautiful enough to be turned into modern wall decor. Buy enough to wrap over a rectangle of plywood. Some fabrics are wider than others, and this will dictate the size of your modern wall decor.

Spread the fabric face-down on a clean surface and place the plywood over it. Spread glue along the edges of the plywood and fold the fabric over. Use painter’s tape to stick the folds to the wood and stretch the fabric or your abstract artwork will look sloppy. Create a similar frame to the one described above, using an accent fabric, or choose an ordinary wooden frame. Either way, this modern wall decor will be striking.

Modern Wall Decor: CLOSEUP PHOTOGRAPHY

Closeup photography of even everyday objects can create gorgeous abstract artwork. Snap closeup photographs of frozen blades of grass, fallen autumn leaves, pebbles in a river, or even mundane objects like a whisk or strainer. Just be sure to use high resolution settings on your camera, to ensure high-quality when the photograph is enlarged to form your modern wall decor. You can also play around with taking black-and-white or sepia photographs for variety.

Kinko’s or your local Wolf Camera Store can enlarge the photograph to the desired size for your modern wall Decor. Complete this abstract artwork with a modern picture frame and hang it in an office.

Modern Wall Decor: ABSTRACT DRIFTWOOD SCULPTURE

This modern wall decor has three-dimensional depth. Begin by collecting broken branches of different width and height, then strip the bark off with a pocket knife.

Condition the bare branches with pre-stain wood conditioner, then paint them with a selection of wood stain hues. Your abstract artwork will look more whimsical depending on how many colors you choose. And remember that the more layers of stain you apply, the more pronounced the color will be. So for an elegant modern wall decor, apply at least three coatings of stain. While for a more casual modern wall decor, use clear stain on some of the sticks.

When the sticks are dry, drill two holes at the top and bottom of each. You will be stringing the sticks together with a wire. Therefore, if you want your modern wall Decor to seem symmetrical, drill the holes in the same places. If you want a more whimsical, abstract artwork, then attach the sticks at different levels. Leave enough wire at the ends to join at the back and form a hook with which to hang your modern wall decor.
